Quality of 409 stainless ?

I'm about to get a full 4" exhaust and want to hear about the 409 stainless. Good and the bad... The 304 stainless is twice the cost. Thanks!

Not sure where you live because you dont say but 409 can and will rust. Its not too much better than the aluminized steel.

I live in NJ and plow snow so the truck does see alot of road salt in the winter. Will the 409 last longer than the aluminized ? The 409 is only 50 bucks more than the alum. steel.

DO NOT waste your money as it wil spot rust!!! I had the MBRP 409 on my old 01 and I was so disgusted with it!!! I have the aluminized on my 07 and after 1 winter it looks as new as the day I put it on. MBRP will do nothing for you for warranty for rusty 409 SS junk......

i wouldn't waste money on the SS of any sort if you live in a climate that sees snow - the salt will eventually eat away at either the 304 or 409. stick with the aluminized unless you have a show truck. you can buy a couple (at least) aluminized systems for the cost of one 304 SS, so the argument that the 304 will last longer is a moot point in my opinion. i have also been looking into 4" systems and can't seem to find anything better than the DTR store price on this MBRP system (no tip):

I work with SS for a liveing as a welder.I have built several custom exausts.like they said show or work truck. The # or rateing 409 being the highest level of carbon in the metal 304 being 2ed in line I think 304 is 6% carbon and 316 being the best at 2% if memory is working right.I have the alumanized 4in.ask ur self this. How many old beater trucks still have the oem exaust and have no leakes. We have several still running the ranch.I also live in callifornia.

Get the aluminzed steel. The 409 system I have is rusty (except the muffler, which is still nice and shiny). And with the aluminzed steel, you can easily weld to it if you need to. Tougher to do with stainless unless you are set up to do it.

Agreed, next system will be Aluminized not the 409 Stainless. Mine is rusted as Tate's except for the muffler.

If I were going stainless I would definately go with 304 over 409. But for the price difference I'd just go with aluminized.

conclusion

After reading up on 409SS... I decided to go with the 409SS system for 299.00. I received it in just a few days after purchasing and it's made by Diamond Eye. It's looks like pretty good quality and I thought it was a helluva deal! I got a 5" MBRP tip to cap it off.

I have had many numerous "aluminized" systems on all my previous vehicles. While the tubing itself seems to last, The problems have always been in the seams, joints, and mounting locations...

"409SS will develop a light surface rust that prevents further corrosion. It is not for looks but it will not rust through"
