pyrometer help

Ok, I have a 1991 5-speed with 4.10 gears and 135,000 miles and I am about to start playing with some "light" power mods. I need a pyrometer before I do anything to it, and was wondering which make, model, type to purchase. I do not need anything fancy, and $$ is a big issue, cause I don't have much. Also, I need an easy way to mount it in the cab.
After gauge install, I am going to do the normal 1st gen pump tweaks and bump up the timing a bit. I also have a 4" exhaust and a Napa BHAF with the smokey mount. Thanks for any input...

triton0708,

The best value is an Isspro, good quality and looks at a price that's 10-20.00 less than others. We sell more of them than any other brand we stock.

I think AUTOMETER also has them if you would like to save some money. If I was you, I would mount it pre turbo, but thats entirely up to you. they seem to be more accurate pre turbo.

I've found the Stewart-Warner pyros to be cheapest by far. They are a good gauge.
Most diesel after market outfits don't carry them though, my bet is not enough profit margin.
Most autoparts can order one for you though, about $50.

thanks a ton guys, I will look into all mentioned. i am leaning towards the autometer sport-comp set-up, not too much $$ and seems to have a good following. Now all I need is a way to mount it on a 1991. Anyone got and pictures? Thanks in advance...

Autometer makes a 2 guage pillar mount, but if your short you may not be able to see the guages easily. You can also get a steering column pod from Geno's garage, if your 91 has a tilt steering column. Other than that it'll be something custom.

Fill out your sig. and do some searches in the 1st gen forum, lots of good info there. Also if your 91 is factory intercooled its technically a 91.5

APWANSON50, I thought I did fill out my sig, but I guess I really did not. I have spent the last million nights going through the archives about every subject that I cared about, but I really want some personal suggestions, since the $$ spent is a big deal to me. I am a broke-*** college student who is really addicted to diesels, so I just don't want to fry my engine.
I am thankfull for any info that I can get....

Well If you want to do it my way( the way my tach is set up), I just found a huge radiator clamp and clamped that baby to the steering colum. I know what you mean by being broke. So I'm pretty good a rigging something up to make it work

Yeah wheelo90, I was thinking of going that route, but I don't know how it would look with a 2 1/16" guage. I was thinking of making a bent piece of diamong tread to mount near the ashtray. Anyone done anything like this. Thanks all.

Well, i never have thought of that one around the astrey but it sounds cool. My tach that I ordered off of autometer came with a mounting "base" i simply ran a clamp through it and clamped it to the steering column, it looks really great.. would post pics but no digital camera. Good luck
