Pyro tapped hole size?

What size hole did you need to drill?

Mine came with a 3/8th's fitting.

Its stainless- could I use a brass fitting to neck it down or will that not handle the heat?

And lastly what anti seize do you recommend?

I'd use some kind of ferrous metal for any effort to bush it down a bit.

Mine was 1/8th NPT, so I can't tell you the right size drill for a 3/8" NPT tap.

I used a (EDIT:5/16ths) drill bit for my 1/8NPT and it worked well.

I hope you don't mean you have a 3/8" NPT adaptor fitting - that is huge for a pyro probe.

Are you reffering to a 3/8" NC thread size on the probe itself?

Most probes come with a 1/8" NPT (some are 1/4" NPT) adaptor that is installed in the manifold that the probe threads into.

If you have the 1/8" NPT adaptor with your probe, the drill size is Q (.332") but a 21/64" (slightly smaller) or a 11/32" (slightly larger) will work fine.

If you have a 1/4" NPT probe adaptor, the drill size is 7/16".

If the adaptor really is 3/8" NPT, the drill size is 9/16".....but I highly doubt it.

Hope this helps.....

I have a big honkin npt fitting looks like. But on edit it would be 3/8th's total width. Sorry about my poor grasp of these standards and how to refer to them.

It got my attention because in pics I have seen of installs it is obvious the fittings were smaller. And even though I don't know much about drilling and tapping I do know a smaller orifice is easier to manage than a big one (at least going into an exhaust casting).

Thanks for the help everyone- I will go forth and find a smaller fitting.

As an added bonus, I will let you all know Big Black Dog is watching progress and so far not too impressed with this phase of the install... he wants to go LAUNCH off the bank about 10 feet...

BTW, for my own knowlege, is a brass fittting somehow not compatable??

I'm not certain what the melting point of brass is but I don't think it is much lower than most aluminum alloys. I think the brass adaptor fitting would be technically ok but I would not suggest it. Use a steel fitting and remove all doubt.

Are you saying your probe didn't come with the appropriate steel adaptor fitting?

You better use a 3/4 or maybe 7/8 bit.

Thanks- it came with a good stainless fitting, just seems large.
