Pre-Lift Pump Auxillary filter?

Has anyone done this, outside a FASS set up?
Will it help the LP life?

I used a filter housing off of a old 7.3 idi motor I had laying around and put it under the bed with a big wix filter on it. Works great and the filters are like 8 bucks apiece. I did change the lift pump to a walbro 392 on the frame at the same time.

I have a pre-strainer "filter" before my Walbro as recommended by GDP. I want my Walbro to last as long as possible. Don't think it hurts pressures at all. But sucking thru a standard diesel filter may hurt a pump over time since it has to suck harder.

Napa Strainer

I used a Metal fuel filter with a paper cartridge in it ,on the FIRST walbro,, The suction from the walbro collapsed the paper cartridge in the fuel filter which starved the FIRST walbro,, Thats why I say use a filter with a metal mesh inside it.

Usually, the general idea is to mount a larger micron filter before the lift pump to keep the bigger "chunks" out of the fuel pump, as I stated before. Then you mount your finer micron filter for the IP after the fuel/lift pump. If you mount a small micron filter before the lift pump, there is a possibilty of starving the lift pump of fuel or making the pump work harder, especially if you have a habit of picking up "dirty" fuel from area suppliers.

In fact I do, he got it from me I have about 1/2 dozen of them in my garage. new heads and new filters. At work we get them shipped to us with every Detroit we buy, and turf this stock setup for a 3 element 10 mic Racor setup. But I was allowed to salvage these before they hit the dumpster.
