Piers HX40 on a lightly-bombed '02???
Hey, all. I just found a deal -- an in-the-box Piers HX40 turbo, a four-inch downpipe, skid plates, and some suspension components for $300. Nothing wrong with any of it -- it's an "estate" thing and the inheritors are keeping the CTD.

My question is whether I can use the HX40 with my present set-up. I've got the '02 ETH with an Edge Pulse, no pump wire connected, RV275 injectors, a BHAF, and a four inch exhaust beyond the resonator. I'm thinking it probably won't do much since I'm running under 350 HP, and even if it does, the stock clutch is holding nicely, and I'm not really interested in going up to the SBC quite yet. So -- what *would* the HX40 do in this situation? Outside the efficiency map, etc.? Worth fooling around with, or should I wait? (I don't want to bother Piers with questions, as he's not selling it to me.)

Thanks.
GP

I personally think that $300 for a $1200 turbo is just a little to hard to pass up no matter what your plans are for the future. Some DTR members are going to be splitting their wig when they see you found a PDR HX40 for $300. Go ahead and buy it now. You can always put it on when you get more fuel. Or sell it the day after you bought it for $800 and pocket $500. Its up to you.

Oh, I bought it, alright ;D -- for the $300 -- in *addition* to the HX40 & downpipe, I got Skyjacker spring leafs for the rear, a Rancho steering stabilizer, new HD front stabilizer bar, skid plates/axle trusses for front & rear, skid plates for fuel tank, oil pan, and transmission, saddle toolboxes and some odds&ends (anyone want some neon purple undercarriage lights? Only for rigs over 500 horsepower that take off and land regularly. . . .)

Question is, do I want to put on the HX40 now, or need I wait for a bigger case of the bombing virus to hit me -- after bigger injectors, etc.

GP

i asked the same question at the diesel dyno day here in KC just last month

would my 02 H.O. benefit with the HX40 with 275RV injectors??

their response was, yes it would increase your MPG about 3 MORE MPG over the HX35 that is currently on my truck right now- just depending on what exhaust housing was on it, would effect the off idle lag and top end charge--

put that turbo on the truck now, and let us know what it feels like, drives like, and most important, what you like/dislike about it--

im interested in purchasing a HX-40 in the future

Did that person have a PDR HX40 on a 24v truck? An HX40 with a 16cm housing (smallest Piers offers) might be a tad too big for just a truck with 275's. I think you might not be happy with the low end. However don't let that scare you away from getting one, just trying to warn ya you don't have alot of fuel to spool it up.
what i meant to say was they said adding the hx40 turbo would get the truck more mpg, that is what im looking for-

but i understand what your saying that the 275's arent big enough-

KatDiesel- what parts do you have on your truck? turbo injectors ect ect??
Re:Piers HX40 on a lightly-bombed '02???
I've become confused my 91 had a 16cm housing and worked fine supplying air to the down rated engine, my understanding would be more turbo lag, more air by volume less PSI. This results in a cleaner burn pulling at top end RPMs yes/no. PK

Last year I showed the same amount of HP (in the proper RPM range) with only an HX35 and DDIII's.

I could be completely wrong about the ETH w/275's not being able to spin the PDR HX40, I don't know of anyone that has tried it, I was just trying to warn you, you might install it and hate the bottom end. Adding a EZ or some type of timing box (minor fuel) might pep it up quite abit.
Re:Piers HX40 on a lightly-bombed '02???
Just reread your signature, you have 275's as well as a D-Box right? Thats a 65hp or so plug in box..correct? The spoolup "might" be livable then with the extra timing on the bottom end. Everyones definition of "lag" is different. My truck is very quick due to the small exhaust housing, 4.10 ratio, and DD camshaft.
Re:Piers HX40 on a lightly-bombed '02???
It's doubtful that adding 275s and a HX40 to an ETH is going to give 3 more miles per gallon. If anything, the HX40 will hurt your milage. You need more boost while cruising - not less, to get more fuel effeciency. A hybrid HX35 would probably be a better bet. It has much better boost at cruise.

275s, by themselves may help some.

actually i havent purchased any injectors yet- there are a few sets of brand new RV 275's with no core charge for 275.00 on ebay-

i just dont want to have to purchase a clutch anytime soon, so i think the 275's and the D-BOX wont make the clutch slip anytime soon-

the d-box is a 65HP/185TQ box
Re:Piers HX40 on a lightly-bombed '02???
Here is what I know. I installed a HX40 w/ 16cm housing when my truck was just under 300hp. Spoolup was horrible and I could only make 30#'s of boost. EGT's rose 200 degrees cruising @ 70 and were EXACTLY the same at the top end. At least 350 hp is needed to turn a HX40. If you read my sig now below my max egt's are only slightly (50 degrees) higher now than they were with 300hp. I would at least have stage 2's with an EZ before I installed a 40. You would need a major fueling box (COMP) to be able to turn a 40 with 275's. This is personal expireance I am passing along. There may be other opinions on the subject.
Edit: Also milage will decrase due to slower spoolup.
I will test it for ya and make sure it makes boost.
