overheating pulling a load

ok

A friend of mine asked me, why truck is overheating, when pulling a load (6 tons) up a hill.

he said the water temp gauge goes up almost to the red. with throttle at about 2000 rpm, OD off.

normal highway and driving its does not even go to 190 deg.

his only mod is a 10 plate, in the middle. truck is a 94 dodge cummins with an auto tranny, stock air filter, stock exhaust.

is this normal? another guy just joked at me about the cummins oveheating pulling a load... has this to be true?

what could be the prob

Pluged radiator.

Tell him not to try to clean it in the truck. Take some time drain the radiator pull it out and pressure wash it really really good.

Go to the truck wash and wash the A/C condensor etc really good then go home pull the rad and pressure wash the living crap out of it. I'll bet its pluged up bad.

i had that problem and I just happened to look down between the intercooler and rad and could see it was really dirty around the edges. Turned out it was over 50% pluged with bugs, dirt and the like.

Thank you guys. he said the radiator looks good from the outside... but he said a guy has a clean radiator, he wants to swap soon, just to see if it helps.
that truck hauls lots of loads, and he is kinda disappointed in his dodge, after selling his 7.3 powerstroke.

what about the 10 plate, does it even hit the plate, if he does not press the throttle all the way down?

The 10 plate should be fine. What he needs(after he fixes his cooling problems) is a better exhaust(straight pipe), and a little better intake would be nice, and more than anything, a good low stall torque converter makes a HUGE difference in pulling. Id say his torque converter is hurting him worse than anything right now. And if he got a good one, he could slide that plate on forward

I would check the fan clutch, the Tstat, to make sure it is opening all the way , and when you pull the rad, to clean it look in the outlet side and see if its full of mineral build up. I just install a new rad on my 97 cuz it was Half pluged in side.

My buddy had a thermostat that would stick, but only towing.

Stranger things have happened.

I would replace the T-stat because its cheap and easy. Then move onto the radiator, fan clutch, etc.

what termostate to buy?
and what tips to replace it?

he says he can hear the fan clutch working properly. we told him he is probably gonna like the straight pipe, cuz of the sweet sound... nothing compares to a cummins sound.... at least no v8
