NEWBIE Here: Best Trans Rebuild Kit for '97 12v 4x4 auto - what model? 47RE or RH?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum so if you have any advice on this, that would be great.

I need to rebuild the trans in my new-to-me '97 12v Auto 4x4. From some research I've done I think it is the A618 47RE, however I've also see 47RH...

What trans does my truck have and what is the difference between the two?

Also, what is the best Trans Rebuild Kit for this trans?

I am having a trans specialist rebuild it, but I want to supply him with the best parts, but have NO CLUE where to look as I am new to Dodge trucks.

I do not need anything that will handle serious horsepower - maybe a fuel plate and cold air intake down the road... I don't plan on tweeking it too much, and will only haul occasionally. At the most I would have on it would be 10,000lbs. - and that is at the VERY most. Normally only the weight of a car and trailer, and that is only occasionaly. It will mostly be used as a work truck for wood, building/home supplies, motorycle, snowmobile hauling.

In other words, I don't need any serious power trans rebuild kit. Reliability and fuel mileage is what I am looking for (then again, arn't we all!)

Any help would be appreciated on where to go for the trans rebuild kit.

Thank you.

More than likely you have a 47re.

DTT
Goerend Brothers
ATS
Suncoast

among others, can supply you the parts and advice you need to fulfill your requirements.

Good luck.

You have the 47RE. The 47RH goes through 95 and from 96 through 02 it is the 47RE. The E at the end of 47RE stands for the fact that the fourth gear overdrive is "E"lectronically controlled and the H stands for the fourth gear is "H"ydrolicly controlled.

I want a built tranny as well and while I cannot speak from experience I repeatedly hear very positive things about Goerend transmissions and about the exceptional customer service. Right now that is the direction I am headed.

Our trucks are so easy and cheap to bomb that you need to build your tranny to hold more power than what you are planning for right now. Plans change once you start you will want a few more goodies.

Has the KDP been taken care of on you truck? If you don't know do a search on this forum you will have days of reading.

You will also find a lot of good info on our trucks at http://dodgeram.org/

Your on the right track, but the RH is only hydraulically controlled for the first 3 gears, the PCM would then control overdrive and lockup functions. There's a hydraulic governor on these transmissions.

On the RE the PCM controlls everything. There is no hydraulic governor, only sensors and a governor pressure solenoid.

Goerend has been mentioned but I'll throw in my experience with Dave. What customer service. I've had my trans just over a month and posted about a funny 3-2 shift problem. Won't shift from 3rd to 2nd at slow speeds, high speeds 35mph up it's fine. I called Dave, 3 states away, and he found me a local shop to take my truck to have diagnosed. Long story short there is a week or sticky spring in the VB so he's shipping a new VB to this local shop and picking up all the cost for the R&R. It was supposed to be fixed today but UPS damaged the box, got wet or something and he didn't want to take any chances so he shipped out another VB yesterday. I should have it installed Thursday or Friday.

Goerend all the way.

Thank you for the correction
