new truck. quest for speed

Hey I am new to this web site and I am new to the world of Cummins. I just purchased a 2001 with an automatic. I love to race. I have a friend with an 00 model 5 speed stick with the following list of mod,s.
#12 turbo housing
Stage 5 BullyDog injectors
A Blue Chip fuel box
4” strait exhaust
I think that is it. His truck seems to be very reliable it idles smooth it also seems to get very good mileage and runs like a spotted bottom ape. We have not run it in the quarter mile yet but it has out run just about everything he has raced. I think he needs to be pulled down a notch. Both his truck and my truck are daily drivers. I will be driving about 70 miles a day going to work and back. I am new to the 5.9 and was wondering if I might be able to get some advise as to what items I should get for my new 01 model that would allow me to dust my buddies truck and keep the reliability that the Cummins is known for.

Dodge Dog please let us know if you have an auto or a standard and what year truck etc then we can inform you as to how thin you wallet is gonna get!

Seriously though
1)get gauges boost/pyro/FP
2) Get a box EDGE TST Bluechip
3)Inectors (I highly recommend EDM from wildcat)
4)Turbo and intake
5)Exhaust
6)trans upgrases either a clutch or auto rebuild this should be one of your first BOMBS up there with the getting a box.
7)Tires lots of tires

Re:new truck. quest for speed

Doug,
In order of fun not priority:

TWIN TURBO's
EZ DRAG COMP
Don's EDM Injectors
5" exhaust for that big turbo on the bottom
Don't buy an airbox yet cause it won't work with those twins! (I think a scotty will ???)
Go ahead and do the headwork and get a cam so you can manage egt's and smoke better.
DTT Transmission with Billet shafts
Guages (of course)

Re:new truck. quest for speed

Speed is money,,, How fast do you want to go ?

So Far,, I've spent about $5,600 trying to drop .4ths - .5ths off the 1/4 and pick up somewhere around 40-80HP.

And get this,, Just about ruined a T-Case last night, cracked it pretty good. I don't think the New Process is going to take it.

-------------------------

To really answer your question,,,

How fast do you really want to go?

I know how to get you into the 15's, or into the 11's

A High 13 Second truck is where drivability starts falling off quickly.

Twin Turbo's will be the most drivable, and will yield the highest gains of HP.

A Cam will help drivability, and MPG, but doesn't do much for racing.

You can just go for a DTT Trans, an HX-40, a COMP, and some Step 4's. That should be good for a 14 in the 1/4.

Or, You can go for low compression pistons, oversize headgasket, head studs, Stronger Valve Springs, Fire Rings, a Big Cam, EDM injectors, Twin Turbos, NOS, VP44 mods, Girdle kits.

Just remember something,, Fuel is Cheap, Air is Expensive.
A COMP, and Step 2's will run about $1,200. A HX-40 will run a little more than that, and won't give you near the HP gain, but you will have more usable, and safe HP.

Just my $.02

Re:new truck. quest for speed

I’m not scared to spend money. I have an initial budget of 4,000 grand and a spare house on the market, which should give me all I need to get nuts if necessary. Just remember that I will be driving this thing every day. I want to do what will yield the most horsepower and not compromise drivability. I think if I could go to the track and crack out thirteen’s in the quarter that would be sweet. There are not very many people hot roddin these things where I am, (Rio Grande Texas aka the Valley). Read the first entry 2001 with automatic.

I'm not to far from you,, in Laredo.

Might want to see some HP in action. Dallas, Oct. 25th, a Dyno day. Should be some high HP trucks, and atleast 3 twin turbo trucks.

I remember asking that very question, worded differently of course, but here is the link...
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=16452

There was alot of info in that and then links to other threads telling even more. It is almost the gateway to the evolution of twins all in that thread. Well not totally of course but it will bring you full circle.

Someone told me R*E*S*E*A*R*C*H and that was some of the best advise I could get. I made up my mind from my research, from that thread, other threads, and PM's.

Enjoy...

Re:new truck. quest for speed

Horace (DTR member BatteringRam) is having ALOT of luck with an HX-40 HT4B combo, although alot of people said it wouldn't work.
Myself,, am about to install a bigger than thou twin setup.

Most people run an HX-35 or HX-40 for the "little" turbo, and the most common "big" turbo is an HT3B.

The 40/3B combo is good for about 75-80PSI boost (you will need mild head work) and about 700HP,, propelling a "light" truck a mid/high 12 second 1/4. 2wd trucks are slower in the 1/4 for now.

Hope this helps,

Re:new truck. quest for speed

Alright then here is my suggestion to make it rip

If you have the money then do this all at once otherwise you are gonna have problems.

Fueling box I would get a TST comp box and stack it with an edge EZ.

Then get yourself a Set od EDM injectors Mach 3's or mach 4's

A B1 turbo from kurt yardley or www.wildcatdiesel.com

A scotty 2 intake system

Fuel system upgrade kit from wildcat diesel as well

Gauges Boost/pyro/FP/trans temp

Then get an installer of DTT transmissions www.dieseltrans.com to do your installation call them up on the toll free line on their site. This is the trans I run and alomst all top pulling and top HP trucks in the country run. Read the forums on this site for all the details on there custom made parts. I'd get the number for you but Im on dialup and its to darn slow!

Exhaust 4" or 5" if you want to use twin turbo's later.

I think thats about it and you will have the truck you are after.

Oh ya one more thing tires lots of tires!

Re:new truck. quest for speed

Jamie is speaking some gospel here... I wish I had discovered this site BEFORE making my original mods...

Make yourself a plan complete with budget and you will not be buying stuff only to take it off and "garage sell" it later.

My case in point... I now have to "Garage Sale" a Diesel Dynamics HX40-16 Turbo and downpipe, An AFE Air box, and will be selling DDIII injectors before long. ADD UP MY LOSS'!!!

I already went to a 4" exhaust and then to a 5" but got lucky that my local 4x4 shop just exchanged that for me... It is good to keep a great report with quality vendors Ok so they have my credit card number on file by now :-[

I also recently exchanged my EZ COMP for the EZ DRAG but thanks to EDGE that was just an upgrade...

James
