New CTD owner w/performance in mind

Just purchased a 99 CTD 2500 4x4 auto and am looking into a few power modifications, nothing that will break the bank, just the tires. From what I have gatherd the edge comp seems to be the box of choice. Also the fuel plate seems fairly common, is the fuel plate hard to modify or is it best to go buy one to fit my needs? I already have a straight through exhaust and BHAF so I am that far ahead, would the combination of the box, plate, exhaust, and BHAF work well? Is there anything in there that would need changing besides that. Also going to get guages. And one last question for yall, where is the best place to get these parts at a decent price? Thanks

SO thats one less thing to buy so instead of a fuel plate the 24v use the adjustable boxes to regulate it? Thanks for the info, what happens if you dial the box way up?

Correct......but its NOT as simple as buying a fuel box or set of injectors on a 24V. The "major problem" with the 24V trucks is the crappy fuel system. The injector pump is cooled and lubed by the fuel (in the older 12V trucks it was cooled and lubed by engine oil). Therefore, to keep the injector pump (VP-44) cool & happy you MUST provide it with an adequate supply of fuel. It is hard enough supply it with enough fuel on a stock truck let alone one that has preformance mods.....crack open a few cold ones and do some reading (theres probably WEEKS worth of reading)....

Muddybeast, What do you plan on doing with your truck? Are you going to use it to tow or hotrod? The reason I ask is because a truck running empty mostly might be modified differently than one that is used to tow. I would suggest checking your fuel system out to see what your lift pump is doing.

With an Automatic Trans,......You get to start shopping for aftermarket transmission rebuilders.

You want gauges first so you can monitor what's happing under the hood.
REEEEAL easy to cause severe engine damage with major fueling boxes.

I plan on getting guages so that is not a problem. If the pump fails oh well it fails, I will get a new one. The truck is going to be a daily driver and tows occasionaly, and I would like to be able to romp on it and it go if I want. Is there a better option for a DD? Thanks

manual trans will need a clutch upgrade around 300hp (varies WIDELY between trucks).
auto will need upgrades, sooner is better (mine's manual).
Gauges first. Edge comp or DDUFM if HO truck, a bit less timing for the HO VP44.
At that point, you can go crazy or leave it alone - but chances are good that it will not end soon
The problem with waiting to see if the lift pump fails is that while it's geting worse, your VP44 is being starved for lube/cooling so the VP44 is taking (more expensive) damage all along. I consider it cheap insurance to monitor the lift pump or mod the fuel delivery system to save the VP.

I would love to be able to say, if my injection pump fails, oh well.. I just don't have that kind of expendable income.

I want to get my HP the hard way (no wire tap.)

I think Bob Wagner is knocking on 400 HP with no wire tap. Let see $500 for Marco's ECM, Big and Bigger money for Turbo and Don's Mach 4s and Huge money for new tranny goodies.

If you do not tap the wire will the pump last or will it still put alot of load on it? I would prefer to not have it fail. Would it be just wiser to with the edge ez(doesnt tap wire correct?) or the comp and not tap the wire till I get a modified fuel system? Is there another way to get power without sacrificing the fuel pump? What do you guys recomend for my conditions. Truck has 150,000 on it and runs like a new truck, it is daily driven 30min to work and then back and we use it to haul alot of stuff mainly firewood and lumber....things of that sort. Just would be fun to have a little more power, i'm not going to go out and race or anything just play a little.

At 150k if the Injection pump is original probably not alot of life left in it if you tap the wire it may or probably will kill the pump. Ez's are cool but if you are trying to run big injectors it is kind of pointless you will never have enough fuel or the equivalent power as someone with a pump wire tap. Just doesnt make sense to me spend alot of money on a turbo and big injectors and you won't tap pump wire?? I have had my wire tapped for 90k now still going well I have kept up fuel pressure as well though. If all you wan't is Ez just get some Rv injectors together that is a little over 100hp

A little more power. We have all said and heard that one before. A EZ box and 275 injectors gives the truck a nice kick in the pants.
My buddy with a PS Ferd asked how come your truck just walks off and leaves me. I told him I have no idea? I told my truck was stock, he's new to the diesel truck thing. I keep telling him he should have bought the Dodge. I might let him in on my deception, before he really believes there is something wrong with his truck.

Well ya would never guess it but the truck went to the shop for a check up and the pump was about to bite the dust, it was cutting out on the interstate so I took it in and we are getting a new one put in. So.....with a new one will I not have to worry about it killing the pump? I mean it will have a warranty on the pump I am guessing This is the lift pump BTW not the injector pump.
