New Borg Warner EFR Turbo On My Gen 2

I'm so excited! I was in having some turbo repair work done at Alamo Turbo in Edmonton (those guys ROCK)...and he pulled out an EFR for me to look at... My jaw hit the floor...such outstanding engineering...BEAUTIFUL!

He gave me a smokin' deal on an 8374 so I couldn't help myself. He ordered me one and I am going to install it on my 2001. Because only the compressor maps are published it's a bit of a shot in the dark. It's rated to 750 hp but I was told to take off 20% because it's a gas rating, not diesel. So a 600 hp turbo is pretty dang good. Very interested to see the spool up.

Anyway, I wanted a turbo that would spool very fast - good for towing around town and for fuel economy. I don't care so much about high performance on this work truck.

I'll post install pics when I get to it in a week or so...

Turbo has still not arrived

In the interim I picked up a BD stainless manifold so the entire side will be pretty shiny once the turbo is installed...

I have been looking at Turbos with ball bearing set ups. I really dont know much about these Turbos.
seems the technology is ever so changing.
Not long ago 4 years ago i think when I did my complete engine rebuild and put on my super b special. If I didn't put in a better cam and keep my mach 4's or go bigger than I would be in LAGVILLE with any turbo at the time on market. I will start to spook about 1450-1600rpm with my current. this turbo Hits super hard after 11-12psi. I have just over 30k DD miles on this Turbo.

The new Turbos like this EFR what is the word on the street with longevity?

I cannot tell in your signature but will you run with this Turbo to spool it and to actually get it to work for you and not against you?

My signature has my 06 ram I believe. Got a triple turbo setup on it, rebuilt engine, cam, etc..

The new EFR is to replace the aftermarket turbo that came with the 01 ram I have. Spools a bit slow for my liking (it's a work truck towing 7000 lbs consistently). I don't care about top end power or drag racing. I want to drive a lot of air when towing in stop and go traffic and when highway driving. So I purchased an 8374 at Alamo turbo in Edmonton (great guys there). The turbine on it is half the weight of other turbines as it's made from titanium aluminide: it's like a ceramic. That, combined with it being dual BB and it should spool pretty quick - in addition to the particular size I chose.

Not much word on EFR for a few reasons I think. I'm guessing guys are not installing them:

1. They're expensive. (~$2400)...but Alamo gave me a smokin' deal.

2. It's not plug-n-play. Requires plumbing for water cooling, probably fab work to get the downpipe and flange to connect.

3. If you do destroy one through abuse, they're costly to fix

But water cooled BB turbos in general are VERY reliable. That's why many modern day vehicles have them. The water cooling minimizes (if not eliminates) the chance of oil cokingin the turbo. Most car owners don't let their cars idle down before shutting off. In addition, blow-by oil vapors are almost non-existent through the cartridge.

There's a rumor out there that the ceramic wheel has "melted" but it's been rigorously tested for hours at 1750 °F. So maybe on a competition diesel, maybe. But on a daily driver, highly skeptical.

Thanks I did some more digging later and found the same sheet.
I'm assuming also why there isn't much info on the web on these turbos due to price and the extra work needed to install. Most want to get something that can be dropped in and done quick. I do see some diesel performance shops that are starting to sell these say on their site that they will soon have a install kit for your application. So Im thinking they will have adapters or plates for manifold and exhaust and maybe a easier connection system for the water cooling. I guess give it time.

I used the Match Bot app on the Borg Warner site and it looks like I picked the right turbo. 10 PSI at 1400 RPM and 35 PSI up top at 3200 RPM. Says the calculated HP will be near 600 - which is in line with specs for the turbo. Also says I need 200 lb/hr fuel but I haven't figured out yet how to convert it to a nozzle size.

I'm lucky to do the install in the presence of my dad this coming week in his big farm shop. He's been an HD mechanic for a looooong time and will have the necessities to make sure there are no hang-ups.

It's interesting that the Match App calculates the HP to be near 600 with only 32 psi. I'm not saying it's wrong but I've always read that rule of thumb is you get about 10 HP for every 1 PSI, so given that rule 32 psi would equate to 320 HP. That said I'm still interested in this turbo as a possible replacement for my near stock HX35 and my son-in-law is very interested as he's looking to buy a replacement for the stock turbo on his 08 with 6.7 that's been barking and giving him fits ever since he bought the truck used (and beyond warranty period & mileage). Good luck with the install. I'm following this thread to see how this works out.

I think that's where guys will jump in and say that PSI and flow are two completely different beasts (which I'm sure you already know). The rule of thumb is a pretty rough one I think.

Instead, I understand that one has to look at the compressor map. You make 10 HP for every lb of air. So being that the map for this turbo flows around a max of 75 lbs of air = 750 hp. However, I was told that the HP numbers listed on each turbo are for GAS engines and I would need to multiply the HP rating by 80%...which is a 600 HP DIESEL turbo.

Looks to be a very nice turbo. Plumbing for h20 cooling will be cake. The factory turbos should have been h2o cooled from day one.

Here's a screenshot of how the truck mapped out on this turbo (red dots are RMP points from 1400 - 3200). I think you're correct: water will be simple. I anticipate mating it with the exhaust may be tricky...doesn't appear to be a common" turbo design.

No, it won't do 750. Yes it is closer to 600 (talking real world not theoretical)

Funny about the comment about the water cooled turbos being "more" reliable.

Going back a few years and you'll see it argued here on this site, nobody wanted to touch Garretts because "they are too expensive and not reliable".

Well they were expensive but also very reliable. The unreliable was a myth. "they can't be rebuilt"... in the same manner as a journal turbo, no, but they can be rebuilt and the bearing cartidge exchanged.

I enjoy my current turbo for mid and up high but in my opinion for me it hits way to hard when it hits and at times hard to keep in a sweet spot around town. I believe my super b special would be a lot better if I had a auto built and did not have 37 tires with my 3.55 rear. i need to go back to 35" and gain some usable rpm in 3rd and 4th and not running either low or high rpms when I'm not in a sweet spot with my turbo. someone told me a diverter vavle set
up may help me but i dont know how those are for daily driving.

I'm liking more and more on this turbo. do you have a stock manifold? do you see it mating up with a 3 piece better? are you saying that mounting it to manifold will be some modding due to flange or lack of flange? space?
sorry I'm asking so much but you are the only person on forum I think that is or will have this turbo.
