Is there a difference in the operations of it? Like the newer truck uses tps whereas the old mechanical uses air?

Both units use vacuum to operate. That said, the newer unit uses pin 20 on the ecm to control the vacuum solenoid relay. Basically you let off the throttle and idle validation turns the brake on.

On the older truck, you'll need a micro-switch for the clutch, and perhaps one for the throttle as well, to allow you to control the brake. Both units will need a power switch that is dash mounted, to control the master power.

Best thing to do is contact PacBrake directly, and ask them about parts. They have really good customer service, and are always willing to help.

I haven't looked at the 12 valve trucks in a while now, and can't recall if the brake bolts on the same way or not. I know on the 24 valve trucks, you replace the entire rear plate and elbow assembly.

When I bought my Pac brake they said the diff. is that the 24v engine uses a 60 pound valve spring. the older 12v uses a lighter spring. So you might need bigger springs or see if Pac brake has a different butterfly valve for the brake you are buying. That you won't over load your valve springs.

Good point. The 12V engine has softer exhaust valve springs and would need an upgrade (not expensive) to stiffer springs for better braking. The higher back pressures would float the exhaust valves and could cause contact with the piston and well, expensive repairs.

I would like to install a Pac brake as well on my 2002 5.9, do you HAVE to replace the valve springs? The reason I ask is I believe I could install the pac brake but the exhaust springs might be too much of a job for me.....
