Need help with sound system
ok im seriously thinking about upgrading my sound system. what kind of speakers do i need???? theres 2 ohms and 4 ohms and ### watts and all this overwhelming stuff. i'll also need a new head unit and amp and sub. I just listen to country, just lookin for a clean sound with a some bass. So what do yall recommend????
ebay. im lookin to spend 400 - 600 on it maybe. yall will probley talk me into more than that. i bought my sound system for my '57 on there but its been a while and i want yalls opinion. Thanks!
...if this is your first home-grown install, go corner a salesman at a car stereo shop, tell him what you want, and REALLY grill him about what he recommends - dual voice coil v. 2 single voice coil subs, separate amps / speakers, built in Hi / Lo bypass (and dB curves) amps, bridged amps, number of lines out of the head unit as well as voltage on each...(etc)...
...then go beat the pants out of his price online and install it yourself.
Pretty straightforward stuff, just have to hear about it and do it a time or two, then you'll be an old hand....
Lots of online literature to be had as well, run a Google search.....

I went to the local stereo shop. Got opinions, suggestions, and install help. There is a value on that and I personally want them to stay in business. If you get your advice locally and buy online, where are you going to get your expertise in the future because the local shop will go out of business. I bought from the local shop because of all their help.
Ok, here is what they advised. They knew I had the Infinity system and knew from experience that the speakers with amps still sounded pretty doggone good if you just swap in a new head unit. They advised to install a reasonably priced Alpine deck (known for their highs), get a wiring harness that would turn the infinity amps on, and the mounting bracket. Bottom line, they really saved me money because I only spent $260 bucks on this stuff and this would have been plenty. Now since I got such a bargain (especially given the advice) I bought an XM kit for the deck and few other things. I really think I got a bargain because of the local expertise.
Off my soap box now, these guys knew what they were talking about and the stock Infinity speakers/amps do sound really solid with a good head unit. You could always go back in and add speakers later if you don't like the sound, but I was pleasantly surprised. I went back in and added a sub and an amp in the back, but I just wanted some more base. Now the amp I bought, I planned on using it to power some front component speakers from JL audion or someone in the future, but to tell you the truth, I'm not sure I'll ever need too....they sound that good. That's not to say the JL wouldn't be better, they would, but for the dollar, this is a great solution.
Let me know if you want part #'s. I'll dig through my boxes and tell you what wiring kits, etc I used.
Good luck, Matt

i dont have the infinity speakers. Just the factery cheapo pecies of crap. Does anybody have a favorite brand? i used kicker speakers and kenwood amp and head unit and a diamond sub in my '57. I am pretty pleased with the sound, just wondering what experience yall have had. Thanks
In my 01 I just used a Pioneer deh47 ran about 200.00 that is the din and a half size (same size as the stock one) though you ceratinly can use just a single din size. I purchased some infinity kappa speakers cant remember which ones but they werent the top of the line but maybe upper mid level( I think they were well under 300.00 for both pairs,) and then later I picked up an eclipse 4 channel amp at a local car stereo tent sale for like 120.00. The amp sure helped out the sound when turned up.
As much as I like great sound you are going to be hard pressed to get super high quality in a CTD(unless sitting still with the engine off). Just too much noise from the engine, road and wind. I didnt exactly go cheap but I didnt feel the need to go all out and spend 2 or 3 times as much as I did.

An Alpine 9827 head unit with a set of 6.5" component speakers up front (seperate mids and tweeters) powered by a 250-300w 2 channel amp, a set of 6.5" 2 ways in the rear, and a 10" dual voice coil sub behind the seat that's got an RMS rating of about 500w at 2 ohms. That should get you a pretty decent system right there. It also shouldn't break the bank if you install it yourself.
See Sig for my setup...under Audio:!
I really like my setup...lots of Bass when you want it, but sounds really good at the same time! I was going for quality, not noisey bass...I think I got it. If someone who knew what they were doing would tune it, I'm sure it could get better...but everyone who hears it thinks it sounds awesome!
I do have a lot of time invested...and quite a few dollars in stuff that adds up over time
Good Luck,
Chris
