You can. I believe that's what was factory in my truck. Only reason I say go with the 6.5" components is because the components will give you a much clearer, defined, and refined sound than any 6x9" 2 way will.

Here is what I have (that i can recall)

2 Eclipse audio 1000 watt amplifiers
1 fosgate 400 watt for the tweeters
1 pioneer headdeck (9300 series)
phoenix gold capacitors
Infinity speakers in front for tweeters and rear in cab
Kenwood 6x9?'s (3 way i believe) on the door panels
4 inch infinity rounds by the footbeds
2 ten inch eclipse audio subwoofers under the rear seat
1 Kicker K900 Equalizer
Alpine CDchanger and XM sateltite radio

Grand total of about 2500 watts or so of stereo.

Sounds like a music hall behind my extended cab.. If tuned right it dont even need to be above 7 or 8 out of forty on the volume to sound just right. Normal conditions i listen to it at those levels, and it still drowns out the sound of the CTD at about 10 or so....

In answer to your question. My old F250 was a single cab and I had twoten inch subwoofers (fosgates) and two 400 watt amps.. take it from me it sounds better in an extended cab....

Im not too big a fan of sony, but my favorites are JL audio, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Alpine. I tend to stay away from Jensen, and Sony for the most part.

Hope this helps

Tx

Thanks for all the help guys. BigBlue, would the 6.5" sound better than a 6x9" 3 way?

Yup. As long as they are a component speaker. Trust me, a good powered component speaker will sound better than anything else on the market.

Go listen to speakers before you buy to see what sounds good to you--some of the component systems I listened to were so harsh I thought they'd make my ears bleed. Memphis and Diamond are a couple that come to mind that are like that. The Polks are a lot smoother and far more listenable.

It may be hard to tell in the stereo shop that components sound better than 6x9s, but I'll pretty much guarantee that they'll sound better in the truck. I have the mids mounted where the 6x9 used to be, and the tweeters mounted up high in the door panel. Check my gallery for a pic.

I'm running the polk momo's in my truck and they are nice. My buddy is running focal's and they are really crisp and clean.

I have the Alpine type R 6.5" components in my truck and they sound INCREDIBLE!!!! I have never owned a better set of components than these, I would highly recommend them.

I have a couple designs for putting a box behind the seat.... you could do one or two 10s or 12s with it...... did 2 10" eclipse and it worked nicely.....

Chirs, let me know some time and I might be able to help you tune your system....

Run them off of an amp. Most components only have a 250-300w peak with 50-100w rms rating so get ya a 250-300w 2 ch amp and that should be fine. I just drilled a hole in my door panel to mount the tweeter. Looking back I wish I would have just bought the dang a-pillars with the tweeter pod. It would have looked more factory and I wouldn't of had to cut my door panel.

Part #'s:

-Alpine CDA-9851 (has built in amp for additional power to infinity speakers)
-Metra 99-6700 (install bracket for stereo to fill the void where factory unit comes out).....this is a pretty basic piece, should be able to find anywhere.
-Metra 70-1817 ***this is the key to wire in the infinity component speakers. It has good instructions with it.

That's pretty much it to get far superior sound that the infinity would add. One of my motivations was to add XM for long road trips. I have part #'s on that too. But for the above items, you can spend far less than $300 bucks and get an excellent improvement. Now it won't be quite like some of the other systems mentioned in this thread but it will be much less $ if you have the infinity or really if it doesn't have the infinity markings. Mine didn't actually say Infinity, but it has the seperate tweeters and the truck has everything else like leather, etc.

Hope it helps some. Good luck, Matt
