NEED HELP WITH PERFORMANCE!!! Please Help. New cumins owner

Hello. I have owned my 96 dodge 5spd 4x4 for 2 years now. The only thing I have done was had my fuel plate moved, witch made a huge power increase. Oh, I have 5 inch exhaust from turbo back with a volant cold air intake. Truck has 280k on it and it runs like it new. Did compression test on it at a very well know diesel shop and they said it like the truck has 50k on it. Well, I have spoke to 3 well know performance mechanix and I have heard 3 different ways to get lots of power. Well, I am looking for opinions. Do I get the auroa turbo, what size/kind. Bds turbo??? Send my p7100 pump in for bigger valves and plungers, with a number 10 fuel plate. Or just injectors and torqe plate. Head, cam valves/springs. What clutch. I have heard to put the old get rag clutch in my truck, that it would hold up. Do I need propane, water, or nos injections. I do have gauges already, isspro. ats's 3 piece exhaust manifold?? What??? What else could i get or need. Please help. Looking for someone who has done this or knows!!! I would like to hit the [B]400rwhp mark!!!!! Thanks

This is something like what I would reccomend:

-First of all GAUGES!(just saw you had those.. )
-#10 plate
-370 injectors
-4k GSK with heavy duty 60lb valve springs
-htb2 turbo or something similar
-timing advanced to 16*-17*
-South Bend Clutch

The getrag clutch is not a good idea. I dont even know if it will fit,but talk to Peter at South Bend from everything i have heard. He will set you straight on what you need clutch wise for 400hp. If i were you i would go with the dual disc, but the heavy single disc he sells will be a lot nicer on the street, but you cant do 3rd gear launches or much truck pulling without a dual disc. This combo should easily set you on a reliable 400hp. Forget nitrous, propane, and water. You only need that if you are going pretty big. Have fun

Eric

Thanks. I will take that all into consideration. The guy who told me about the get rag clutch uses it and he has a 96 twin turbo. It has worked for him. I will check out the south bend. I appreciate your help

I think that ATS makes 425hp injectors for 12 valve. I would look at that.

Thanks for all your help you guys. I am so new at the diesel stuff. I am learing everyday! Tell me how to get 350rwhp, and not have drivability problems. This is pretty much what I have been told to do. Exhaust, witch I have done (5inch). Good intake, witch I have done (volant cold air kit with the sock) Number 10 fuel plate, send pump in and get bigger valves and plungers to take it from 330cc's to around 600cc's. Gauges, witch I have done (EGT/boost). 60lbs springs. South bend clutch. I don't want to pull so do I need the dual disc??? Auroa turbo, or what. I have gotten other opinions, but I don't know what kind of turbo they are talking about. Please help of give web page. Some just say 16 cm. ????? Oh, and I beefier output shaft on my 5 speed. Also, things like the big mouth turbo back exhaust, or the ats 3 piece exhaust manifold. I don't know. Can someone explain start to finish, in your opinion what I should do?? I appreciate all the help you guys. I love this diesel truck resource page. Can't believe the responses I am getting. Thanks

Welcome to the website! The members here have already given you some good advice.

I have a 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve but my truck has an automatic tranny.
FWIW,.....way back when I started doing the modifications to my truck I was able to get 381 H.P. with the following modifications:

1.) #4 TST Cam Plate
2.) 370 Diamond B Marine Injectors
3.) Have P7100 Fuel Pump "recalibrated" to 300cc's of fuel
4.) Remove the stock HX-35/12 turbo and install an HX-40/16 Turbo
5.) Upgraded TC and valve body in transmission

The "recalibration" on your P7100 fuel pump will need to be done by a competent Bosch Certified Fuel Shop. You have to have the pump removed to have this done as the shop "calibrates" the pump on a fuel test stand.
Costs for this range from $300.00-$500.00.

Your results may differ somewhat, but this would get you close to where you want to be. There are ALOT more turbochargers on the market now than when I did my early mods,.....so shop around and talk to owners who have actually run the different turbos. On the 12 valve engines, bigger is not always better.

Hope this has helped you some. Good luck!

Send your pump to Piers if you want 600ccs
However that will net you slightly more than the 350hp you want

I do....You MUST devise a plan and decide how much HP you want. It is expensive to just throw parts at the truck and see how much HP it will get you. You need a plan. Once you have a ballpark idea of where you want to be HP wise, then you can select the parts accordingly. Both cumminsdriver635 and John_P give some good advice.

"Dr. Evil" probably gave the you the best advice of all of us,....namely,......."devise a plan and decide how much H.P. you want." I would add to that, don't be in a hurry, but take your time and talk to ALOT of other Dodge CTD owners to see what they are running and what has worked well for them. Another suggestion I have is "start small, with the less expensive parts and slowly work your way up according to your budget!"
For example, a set of new 12 valve performance injectors is cheaper than a new dual disc clutch!

Go to some of the diesel rallies that are put on across the U.S. from to spring to late summer. There is ALOT of owners at those events that have performance trucks going from "mild to wild!" Some of the better events I would recommend are: May Madness in Las Vegas, Thunder In Indianapolis,
Scheid Diesel Extravaganza in Terre Haute, Indiana to name a few. At these events, you can personally talk to the truck owners and see what they like and don't like. Heck,.....if you can make it to any of the ones I attend I would be glad to let you drive my truck!

I can tell you that one big mistake I made early on was buying products that looked good, but after buying it finding out it was NOT good for my personal truck. Example: The early B-1 Turbos. I paid $1600 for that turbo and it had BAD bottom end lag on my 96'. Later, I found the HX-40/16 worked alot better for me and I am still using them.

Didn't mean to get so "long winded" on this "dslpwr",..........but I can empathize with you on how hard and confusing it is to get started.

Anyway,.......good luck! As you already found out, this is a great diesel website with alot of knowledgable, friendly people. I for one know that I will help you in anyway I can and feel that all the other DTR Members feel the same way!

As stated devise a plan or at least how you want to use your truck. 400 HP is cake on your truck if it has a 215 pump..... 400 useable HP takes a little more work. Be prepared to upgrade the clutch or tranny. Tell us more about how you want to use the truck and full advise can be given.

Once again you guys, thanks. I really can't believe the response that one gets on this web page. Thanks Jetpilot, txdiesel007, John P, and everyone else. You guys are great. Txdiesel007, like I said before, I am new at this diesel thing. What or where is ps infidel, never heard of it. Oh, how did you like montana? I love it. Well guys, here in Montana we don't have much diesel performance going on. So its kind of hard to speak to anyone. Most of the guys that own/work at diesel shops are more into getting things running right, or fixing it. Not much performance. What I am looking to do with my truck is kind of in the middle of both worlds. Pulling, but not pulling sleds, just horses, hay, and my camper. You know, that kind of stuff. At the same time, I am tired of pulling up to a Duramax and not even having a chance from the start, or even hiway speeds, going up a hill or whatever. I don't want to stay with him either, I want to blow by him. I don't know how much hp I need. That is what I am looking to do. I have taken all of the information that you guys have given me in to consideration. The biggest thing that I seem to here is you don't have to buy the most expensive to get what you want or be any better. Well, now that everyone knows what I am looking for... If anyone wants to walk me through what they think I should do in detail, feel free!!!!! Start to finish. If anyone knows anyone else that specializes in 12 valves, please let me know. Thanks again!!!!
