My Custom Gauge Mount
My Custom Gauge Mount
The previous owner of my truck only installed the EGT and pyro gauges on the a-pillar, so I knew I needed a fuel pressure gauge. He used the Autometer Ultra-lites...while I liked them, I didn't want to mess with the existing setup and I really didn't want to spend $200 on the matching FP gauge. I thought about the steering column pod, but didn't care for its placement of the gauge, so I decided to fab up a pod on the ash tray...NOBODY is going to smoke in my truck anyway!
Here it is...I'm quite happy with the result:

And of course, my lovely assistant:

I do my share of fabrication, but not by trade...I'm mainly just a tinkerer with patience.
The ash tray does still open...it was possible (with a bit of fiddling) to run the lines between the gray outer cover and the black plastic bin, but since I don't use my tray for anything, I just ran them through the inside. There's some pretty big holes to run through the dash once you're in the tray; if you pull out your ashtray, you see what I mean.
It went together pretty fast, but that's only because I actually had a pod to work with. I simply cut the backing off the pod I had and shaped it to the curve of the tray; a tiny bit of glasswork to hold it on/taper it to match and it was good to go.
If you've got a pod handy or just find one cheap, its a really easy hour-long project. Most pods are cheap plastic and really easy to shape! :-) I'd have no problem doing another, given an ash tray and a pod, but anyone with a small saw and a file can do it.

. . .
There's a lot of folks here who've done it and haven't burned yet. Therefore it Must be safe.
(No flaming intended).Hopefully, he's got some sort of isolator in-line outside the cab.
That'd be the frosting on an outstanding job.
. . . . .. He did say nobody would be smoking.
That does look good! I put mine in the dash where the cubby hole used to be.
I'll have to take a pic of my ashtray with Howard's Turbo Cooldown Timer and my TC lock-up switch in it. (BTW,,,,,, I still smoke, but I have always used a small hole ashtray that sits in the cupholder.)
