Is my Autometer Pyro dead? It's stuck at 550-600

The title says it all. It's completely unresponsive. It's done this before, but always "snapped out of it" after a minute or two.

Now, I made the whole 13 min drive to work with NO MOVEMENT!

It's not a ground issue, because if I unground it, the needle dives below zero.

Is the probe toast? Or is the probe good and the guage bad?

Finally, if it IS the gauge, can I reuse the same probe and wiring with a different pyro (non-Autometer.

I can't imagine soot buildup or such is the problem- it's always had soot

Thanks for the help.

I would be willing to bet that if the power is turned off to the gauge and the needle returns to 0 that it would most likely be the probe and not the gauge.......if the gauge stays stuck at 550 with the power turned off to the gauge, I would say that the gauge is the problem. Either way, I would call or email Autometers tech line.....I have a feeling they will be able to diagnose the problem quickly and give you a definitve answer as to which is the culprit.

The needle goes to 0 when the key is off.

I've also had it go from being stuck at 550 to flashing up to 1600, then instantly read the proper temp.

Weird. I think it's possessed. Never should let that Phord friend drive it.

HOHN,

Try taking the leads of the pyro apart where they hook to the wires down by the manifold. Clean them really good, then try it again.

Mine did this sort of thing about a month back, but it was really erratic. I took the leads out of the heat shrink, and taped them separate and all is good!

I should try that. I have a new harness on the way, though.

Autometer gave me some amazing service. I called them and told them about the problem, and withing 30 seconds I was off the phone with a new probe and harness on the way to me!

Amazing customer service. I was never a huge AM fan, but I give them serious kudos for my experience this afternoon!

Yeah, Auto Meter's customer service was excellent with me too. My boost gauge started sticking about 10 months after I bought it, so I called them up. They said to send it in with a copy of the reciept and they see what they could do. They sent me a new gauge about 3 days later, priority shipping!

Speaking of which, I'm having the same problem again! Lets try for round three!

My guage acts up about every two weeks. Just bounces around goes dead comes back on, turn the directional signal on and the needle will jump with the signal, so on and so on. I have checked all of the wires going to power and ground. Took them apart and re-soldered. All is good for a couple more weeks then it might start up again. I can go on a 300 mile trip with no problems and then while heading home it will act up for a couple of minutes. Now I know what problems NASA was having with the shuttle!

WOW!

Awesome customer service from Autometer! NOt only are the replacing my Pyro for free, but they're upgrading me to an NV series from my old Ultralight!!!!!

Can't beat that for just the cost of shipping the gauge to them!

Thank you, Autometer! Great Job!

You know, my Autometer pyro acted up a couple of months ago. needle started bouncing 100*F at idle, would steady out on acceleration. I unhooked, cleaned, and rehooked up the wiring harness, and the bounce went away. But now the temp seems to run about 50*F + hotter than it used to - but only under high boost or acceleration, not at idle.... Been wondering if I need a new probe and/or gauge.

Hey HOHN!!

Do you have the new NV yet?? Are they Silver or White??

I'm looking to sell my gauges to an employee at the store for his 7.3L (), and would either replace them with these, or Stewart Warners.

The thing is, I need silver so they match my factory gauge color!
Thanks,
Chris

I don't have it yet, but the face it white, not silver like the Ultralite.

I like the NVs better, both daylight and lit up at night.
