Muffler Advice

I am thinking about building a new exhaust. Anybody have ideas for a good muffler? Has anyone tried running without the muffler and found it too loud. We really only use this vehicle for traveling. I used to travel in my old 6.9l that was straigt piped, but I got tried of my ears ringing for two days afterward.

let someone steal the muffler and silencer ring in the turbo and you'll love it

if its to loud for your tastes when straight piped, u can always put the resonator back on to quiet it down a bit. seems like this is the way to go for people who travel long distances.

(not me, i like it loud )

Loose the muffler, it sounds great. Loose the silencer ring, it sounds even better

if you dont want it to loud, lose the muffler and keep the resonator.itll have a nice rumble but only a slight drone if your lugging it.if your worried about it being to loud, then it will be straighted w/o resonator for your taste. i even picked up 1 mpg doing mine this way.

I really like my 4" turbo to tail straight pipes. I have towed with it (8000 pounds) and it was no problem sound wise.

Enjoy, let us know what you end up doing!

I second the removal of the muffler but leave the resonator. This will give you the straight through flow you are looking for but stop any annoying dronning you will get towing with a straight pipe. The resonator is 4" straight through on the inside. Unless you want to get a full 4" system. Exhaust systems are pretty cheap anymore.

I straight piped mine, 6 feet of 3" tubing, and welded it in. It would have been really nice if the tubing was 3" ID, so it would slide in. It was tough to seal all the way around the top, so I got some rubber plumbing "connectors", to stop the small leaks, and wrapped them around. I was worried about melting them, but they haven't warped. It sounds really MEAN now. My brother has cat back on his chevy, and you can't even tell his is running next to mine. It isn't loud at all in the cab. I get more road noise than anything. I just put some tunes on, and it doesnt' matter. But, maybe me being 16 might have something to do with it (I love the sound of a straight piped gasser, boy she barks )

Does taking out the silencer ring just reduce the turbo wind noise, or does it actually give you more exhaust grunt?

taking out s-ring makes a louder whisle because the air is hitting the flanges in the housing of the turbo-or something like that, but anyhow it will not help your power and it will not hurt- just makes more turbo whistle- not so much with stock air filter, but whith a bhaf or scotty II she zings! take it out, you'll like it!

I wonder if it matters where you put the muffler? if you put it closer to the downpipe, or closer to the rear of the truck.......will it change the sound?

I have some 3" ss pipe I am fixing to straight pipe my truck with, and I was thinking of throwing a walker muff. in there. But will the location of the muff make a difference in sound\performance?
