I'm only at 14 mpg with 265 tire, auto, and 4:10's, but a few years ago I had a 2001 with the 5 speed and would get about 18-20, I miss those mpg...

I have not gotten below 14mpg and that was pullin a 16ft trailer w/round bales on it. Typically i see 15-16 and thats on city & highway. Plus i tend(99.9% of the time) to have a lead foot and go as fast as I can from point A to B.

Typical mileage for me is 16 city/20hwy. I've gotten is bad as 14 on the hwy (below zero temps with bulky stuff in the bed and going way too fast).

I've also gotten as good as 25.4 with the cruise set at 52mph or so.

Thanks for all the help!!!!
I have an auto w/ 3.55's and 265 BFG AT.
I think there are probably a couple of factors in my low MPG.
1. TC not locking up (ATS on the way so that should help)
2. Haven't changed the fuel filter since I got the truck.
3. Over sided tires and not recallibrating the speedometer

so I'm probably getting better MPG than my odometer is showing.

So any guesses on what the difference in speed/distance is from stock to 265 or 285's (what I want next)??

I would not go by the over head if you got one i cant remember if the 98s had the over head mpg i dont think they did. now that thats out of the way you should probally think about doin the fuel filter it will be the best 15 bucks LOL you probally dont want to see what the filter looks like when it comes out i run a 235/85/16 Toyo M55 Load E so i could not tell you on the size of tire

265's are around 31.5" depending on the tire, 285's vary from 32 to 33" depending on the tire, and your stock tires should be 245's 30.5" so your speedo is off by 3%, the way I figure you are really getting 14-16 x 3% = 14.4 - 16.5 mpg.

I got 14.5 on a tank with 200 miles of towing 3k at 2500 rpm and about 180 miles of highway with no load.

Tank should be around 35 gallons if im not mistaken.

Best ever of 22.6 most of the time I get 19-21 on the highway driving sensibly. 13 to 15 when towing. I've gotten as low as 11 when towing 17 large round bales.

#1 will cost 2-3 mpg
#2 wouldn't matter to mpg
#3 big tires will make mpg read lower!

Lead foot

i usually average around 14-17 empty or with a bed full of stuff, and i have gotten right at 19-20 on the highway keeping it at 65, sucked going that slow when everyone else is hitting 80-90, but ive got a dually, strike 1, 4wd, strike 2, and a lead foot, strike 3, so fuel mileage wont allways be that good, but its good enough for me.

Currently getting just under 20 highway with winter grade #2. 21-22 in the summer when I have the hard bed cover on. Drops to 15-16 when towing 2 horse bumper pull trailer with 2 horses (adding 5500#'s to gross). 13-14 when towing 20' gooseneck flatbed with 200 fresh cut square bales (about 14000#'s added to gross).

You Think???
Correct those three things and you should pick up 2-3 mph! Which would put you about right... 15-17 mpg for an automatic...in the mountains...in winter!
I get 16 & 18 (hwy) on the flatlands.
