Motor wont turn with barring tool

I just swapped out pumps and Im gettin ready to time the truck. So Im turning the motor over clockwise and about 90deg before tdc it stops and wont go any more but i can turn it all day long counterclockwise. But when I come up clockwise on this one spot it just stops. Also it isnt as smooth as some other trucks I have worked on its kinda rough turning the tool over.

Is it posible the flex plate has some bad teeth in that spot? What about compression needing to bleed off? Sorry I got nothing else off the top

Well what I think is happening is that almost all the teeth are a little rounded of at the front. And the tool doesnt fit very snug in the hole. So what is happening is when you go counterclockwise it pushes the tool farther into the flexplate and when you go the other direction it pulls it away and it jams up. Because it doesnt just do it at one spot anymore its all the time.

All this is mainly caused because I have a turbo of a a 99 model and the wastegate is in the way for me to put my 4ft extension in between the turbo and the heat exchanger. So I am having to put my extension under the turbo and at a angle so it is not staight on like it would be if it were the other way. So thats why its cocking the tool over and jamming up.

to turn it clock wise, i use a 15 mm socket and ratch on any flywheel bolt. works great.

Yea but the purpose of having the barring tool and extension is you can just stand up in front of the motor. Where everything is so that you can time a truck by yourself. and not have one persone turnin a ratchet and the other watchin the dial indicator.

I run into this sometimes with my truck. Usually I just back the engine up a couple of teeth then try again. Sometimes if that doesnt work I just muscle it and it gets past the "hard" point.

Try a 3/8" drive u-joint adapter. I use one and run my extensions right up beside the alternator.

What brand of barring tool is it? My K-D fits with next to no play.

Not funny I did blow the headgasket again last night

The barring tool came straight from cummins and I already have a u joint welded to my extension. The prob is the turbo off of a 99 model truck cuz the wastgate is in the way. But now I have to pull the head anyway Im going to see if going straight in helps it any.

I put a ratchet on the alternator bolt and turn it over. This goes the opposite direction to when the engine is running. I do this when I'm adjusting my valves and works quite well. I'm not sure if this works on the older trucks but works on 01 and 02's.
