mechanical vs electrical gauges
mechanical vs electrical gauges
I can imagine how many times this has come up, but I dont wanna do a search. There might be something new out there I need to know about. I'm looking to put a fuel press. ga., at least, in my wife's ride. What's the diff. between mech. and elec.? Any chance of fuel leaks in cab with mech.? How about needle response time, of each, compared to fuel press. changes? Where and how much? I think, if we keep this truck,I'm going to get a two ga. dashtop holder, painted to match her interior. Would any outfit sell the ga.'s/holder/painted to match for this project? 'Preciate ya.
Almost every time I've got a warning reading from an electrical gauge it was the gauge's fault not the system it was monitoring. Mechanical is more trustworthy and with just basic plumbing skills will be leak free for life. Most common leak sources are from overtightening and using Teflon tape with petroleum products.
Response time is the same as with electrical.

I'll agree with infidel. Those are the most common types of errors that cause leaks. Just take your time when installing the mech. fp gauge and do it right the 1st time.
Give Rod a call at http://www.wildcatdiesel.com/header.htm and he will hook you up with what you need. Be prepared to spend around $200 for the 2 gauge set up, give or take a few bucks.
I'd also look into the 3 gauge set up. Boost, EGT, and FP are going to be your primary concern right now. Will cost you a tad bit more for the set up, but I think you will be happier in the long run.
Good luck,
Hunter

Gage technology has come a very long way, I think either one would work and give accurate readings. I like to use mechanical gages for boost, vacuum. And for oil and trans temperatures, oil and trany pressures, EGT's, Rear diff temps, intake air temps, etc I like the convenience and safety of an electrical Gage. I no not like bringing oil or fuel into the cab, nor do I like the the increased possibility of leaks. There is absolutely nothing wrong with electrical gages, just go with a proven name and you will get accurate and consistent readings.
