i got a tapped banjo bolt from geno's and put it on the output of the fuel filter housing, then hooked in my version of a needle valve, adapted to a short piece of rubber hose, then to a 4' SS braided #3 line into the cab to the gage.

Ok. Have decided to go with the Geno's 18" hose and hook up to the schrader valve on the VP. Seems to be the simplest method of install, can still be removed easily to test fuel pressure if need be.
Seems to me that pre-filter doesn't make sense since the reason for the FP gauge in the first place is to ensure that the VP is getting proper pressure and therefore lube. Putting the FP gauge pre-filter would give you LP pressure but not what is ACTUALLY getting to the VP.
Tapping off the bottom of the filter seems like a good possibility but the schrader valve is right there staring you in the face.
