Maintenance Questions

My truck is approaching 85,000 miles, and is 6 years old. And very stock. What kinds of maintenance issues should I be considering soon? Should you replace the water pump, or the fuel pump, (what is a lift pump?) or have the valves checked, etc. at this point? Figured I'd get some routine stuff done to keep her in good shape.

Do you have an owners manual? Mine has the maintenance schedule for given mileages. Makes it easy to keep track of what has/needs to be done and when.

Fuel system is comprised of two pumps. A Lift pump is kinda like your standard fuel pump, but rather than being inside the tank it's located in the engine compartment. The Injection Pump (VP44) is the pump that actually creates the high pressure flow to the injectors.
LP= $130.00
VP$$= $1,200-1,600

The object is to not let the Lift Pump fail and reduce or cut off the supply to the Injection Pump, this could lead to Injection Pump failure and a costy repair.

Yeah, I see the suggested maintenance schedule in the owners manual. Dang, I'm behind. I've got to back up to the 60,000 mile list. Fan hub, damper, water pump weep hole (!), coolant, belts. Can I find info on how to inspect and replace these parts in like a Haynes or Chilton manual? I've got some inspecting to do, evidently. Just wondering if there were any parts that were notorious for failing and costing lots of $ to fix, that can be replaced easily ahead of time.

Thanks for the info on the lift pump. Is it a good idea to replace it, does it wear out eventually, and cause injector pump failure?

Yes.
If you're still on the original lift pump in a 99, you need to go buy a lottery ticket ASAP.

Forget the Chilton's, and get the real service manuals.
http://www.techauthority.com is a good place to get them.

10-4 on the lift pump, I'll get that replaced ASAP. Thanks a lot for the link. I'll order a service manual for it, I'm sure it will come in handy. $90, ouch!
