MAD ECM and the HO
I have read that the HO doesn't tolerate added timing well. I have also read that the MAD ECM adds timing.
Does that mean that you shouldn't put a MAD ECM on an HO if you want your headgasket to live?
TIA

There are two models of the MAD ECM.
one with timing....... one w/o timing, for the ez's & Comps, etc.
You can order either; your choice!
It gets a little complicated for Calif trucks...that is a different ECM program. When you order, they ask if you have a Calif. truck or a "Federal" truck. I assume they have two timing versions for Calif trucks also, but ... Best to talk to Bob Wagner, or PM Marco (the mfg)... http://www.wagnerandassociates.biz/

Added timing supplied with the Comp to an HO is "worse" than the added timing of the MAD ECM. The programimg of the MAD is specific to year and type (EX: HO or SO). So Marco programs the ECM to your specific year and type. The comp programming is not specific to year, only the connector is different. Now, the comp is adjustable and the MAD is not. From all the reading, the Mad ECM is one of the best mods for ETH engines.

Which direction should I go?
I want to keep my comp (running as ez) for the simple reason that I like to be able to tone down the power when things get icy and wet around here. It sounds like the timing from the catcher would be better suited for my ETH than the comps, but I want the adjustability for the times when the roads are slippery.
Any recommendations?

The MAD ECM itself will not help your "when things get icy and wet" situation. All of the available torque way earlier in the throttle will create driving issues. A good option is to keep the stock ECM and run it in the winter. Run the MAD in the warmer months. I am sure with enough practice you will feel comfortable with the MAD all year round.
