Luk Clutch

I can get a reasonable price locally on a Luk Pro Gold 12.25" clutch...

what are people's experiences with these... how well do they hold/last? I don't plan to bomb my truck too much, maybe to 300-350hp. It is currently stock.

I suspect a clutch problem, and when I remove the tranny/transfer case, I'll probably want to replace the clutch anyway.

How much stronger are the 13" clutches? I would probably only go with the 400 or 500 hp Valair clutch if I went to 13".

I ran a LUK 13" & only got 30k miles & it was very grabby through every mile. Get a Southbend con ofe & be done with it....trust me.

I have a Luk progold, and it shifts smooth. All I have are the mods in my sig, and it holds fine. I read somewhere that it is supposed to hold ~600 foot pounds of torque, but I am not sure.

I'm running a LuK Cermatalic.
I haven't herd much about Pro-Golds behind diesels.
But the LuK clutch is not designed to be slipped, it is a grab and go clutch.
They are good clutches if ran properly. They make clutches for Class 7,8 and 9 trucks I'm pretty positive.

No single disc is designed to be slipped at all. Luk makes a good clutch, but if you are planning on sled pulling or drag racing you may want to look elsewhere.

The 3rd gens with the G56 trannies come with a stock LUK clutch - made in Germany and work very well.

It's certainly no SB, but the LUK launches the '05 in 3rd HI at the drags and yanks the sled in 3rd LO at the track.

The 2nd gen Dodge trucks were also equipped with Luk clutches. The stockers are great. I was commenting on the 13" cerametallic clutches. A.K.A flywheel grinders.

Stock clutch on a 2nd gen is a Luk standard. I upgraded to the Luk Gold, it held with comp on 5x5 through all the gears but with my 35's, it would not launch well in 2nd gear with the comp turned up. Eventually my Luk Gold fried!
JSPulliam21 is just running stage two jammer nozzles, good for maybe 75 HP over stock, that is why his clutch is still fine with his 35" tires.

I would get the valair 13" upgrade. The standard woven organic faced clutch with the heavier plate load held more power than the LUK gold did. Not much, but it did hold more. If you got the Valair 13" ofe clutch, you would be very happy and never out grow it. If you are really only shooting for 300-350, the standard organic 13" upgrade will be enough.

My 13" organic Valair did not slip till I added RV 275's on top of Edge Comp rolling on 3.55 gears and 35" tires. In fact it never slipped once the clutch was engaged, just slipped at takeoff when I did my occasional street race to beat my brother's Honda Accord.

On a side note, when I burned up my standard 13" organic upgrade, Dan at Valair sent me a free FE clutch since he's the one who recommended the standard organic for my mods at that time. Anyway, his customer service was great!

Just my experiences.

My pro gold has been in there for about a year and is still holding well. I am gonna guess its been 15-20K miles. I abuse the clutch pretty badly as I do alot of full throttle blasts. I have also towed my 5ver which is around 15K pounds from time to time. The only slipping to date is under load is if you drag your left foot and go wot it will slip slightly. All that being said I have probably met the upper limits of this clutch and will need to upgrade if I decide to push the motor any further.

Like I said, when you start getting serious about power, you better get serious about a clutch. I should have a Comp next week, so we will test the old Luk out then.

I bet you burn up your clutch within two months of the comp install. I bet you slip the clutch your first 5x5 wot run.

Hopefully, I will have enough sense and self control to know when the clutch slips and not to do it any more. I am not concerned. I won't ruin my perfectly good clutch just because I was too ignorant to notice that my clutch slipped.

Hmm... where can I get the Valair clutch in Canada (or sent to Canada)?

One convenience of the Luk is that I can buy it locally. (NADP wanted to sell it for $655, while another shop wants $455 *COUGH*).
