Looking for a Cummins, Help.

What year(s) should I be trying to locate? I know about the code "53" cracking problems but I'm not sure if it was 99-2000 or 99-2001.

I am looking for a Cummins to build up for everyday driving and Lots of fun. I am leaning towards a 24v so that's whay I'm posting it here. But I have not completely made my mind up to not go with a 12v. I really would like the adjustability the electronics give me on the fly. I will be sled pulling regularly but also towing my 8k travel trailer about a dozen times a season. This is for my Fummins conversion so my slate is clean and I can pretty much do whatever at this point.

I will be "building" this engine before the install...Studded, cammed, o-ringed, head work, injectors, twins.....This will be bolted to a NV5600.

Brent.

You would probably be happy with either one. Granted, the "on the fly" changes for the 24v is a plus.

As far as the 53 block, mine has 185k on it with no problems. But, I'm not near the power levels you're looking for, so it might be a good idea to pass on the 53.

Tough decision. 12v are much cheaper and you dont have to deal with Vp44s. 24v are nice due to the adjustability. Id go 24v since I have one.

Thanks for the input. I have read that the Gen III Cummins has the strongest block yet. Is this true? I wouldn't mind doing a Gen III Fummins since my friends 05 runs real good with his TST box. He is awaiting a clutch from Haisley and a S300 from Schied. Then I bet she'll run!

Anyways back to the topic. What years did the code "55" block exist? Is this the strongest block for a 12v or 24v build up?

Thanks,
Brent.

Any input on what I asked above?

Also, there are a few on Ebay right now...One is a 2001 so is this a "53" code block?

Thanks,
Brent.

53s are found in 98 - 01 but they thin out in the 01s. For the amount that you see have cracked i wouldnt loose sleep over it. I have a 53 and dont care. im gonna bomb as far as i can. I think it might of been Jim Fulmer (not quite shure) had a 700+ 53 for a long time and had no problems. If ya find a good price jump on it. I would look for an 03 cr motor they are really starting to shine these days.

Thanks Rob, I have another thread going on the 12v forum similar to this one but more 12v oriented. I do thank you for the info on the correct years to look for and the advise on the 53 blocks. Is the code 53 block only a 24v thing or did the early 98 12v have these blocks aswell?
