I'm not sure if the guy has made them for diesels yet, but on my 02 1500 with the 4.7 I had an intake from a member on dodgetalk, best **** intake I've seen. But again not sure if hes even made them for diesels yet, and if he has it prob be for the 03 and up trucks.

I got my BHAF as a gift and I do love it to be honest... but I was thinking of trying the AEM Brute Force Dry Flow before I recieved my BHAF.

I have been reading and i am seeing alot of people saying that air intakes dont actually help all that much power wise all they do is clean the air better. Is this true, what do they accomplish if they dont add power and clean air better?

Many "performance" intakes will NOT clean the air better. Many are actually, MUCH worse to the point where they do not meet Cummins specs for air cleanliness.

Look for a filter that uses no oil, and you're headed in the right direction.

I switched from a BHAF to an AFE with the Pro-Guard 7 filter and it's the race magnum model. It dropped my cruising EGT's about 50 degrees over the BHAF.

The more i think about it the more inportant air clenlieness is to me since most of the summer the truck spends bouncen around in dusty fields.

SO oil systems are not as good as dry syestems.

Some units will drop egts.

What about performance do these fancy air intakes actually help?

Debates on air filters have been around longer than filters themselves.

Typically, paper filters work best. Especially when new. As they pickup silt, they become less able to move air easily. But, they don't allow as many contaminants into the system.

Oil gauze type filters. Very poor filtering until they get dirty. As they do, effenciency drops to that of a new paper filter. The dirtier they get, the better they filter.

Advantage of the oil filter is extended cleaning/ replacement intervals and higher flow when clean. Disadvantage is poor filtering when clean.

When I lived in Arizona, all I ran was oil type filters. I rana 2 stage type which helped with filtering, and still allowed for better flow. When I had paper filters, they were shot in 1 month.

In the Pacific NW, dust is not much of an issue.

There is a balancing act between filtering ability and performance. The 2 typically don't share all the same characteristics. If you need more air to feed hungry twins, a big single or to cool the charge a bit, the risk to leave some filtering ability on the table may be warranted.

If you want that thing to be spotless for a million miles, you better use a very good filter and seal every avenue of dust ingestion.

To me, I can accept the added wear of the aftermarket filters.

It's important to keep things in perspective, too.

I'm a pretty harsh critic of oiled gauze filters, but the reality is that filters have made a lot of advancements, and the oiled gauze filters of today are better than ever.

The perspective I mention is that a super-efficient filter might filter "TEN TIMES" better or whatever the marketing guys are yelling. But ten times better than what? Ten times better than good enough is still just good enough, right?

I'm looking into building/fabbing a large panel-style filter that would follow the underhood contours and mate to a cold air scoop using some kind of weatherstripping/gasket. The idea here is huge flow, outside air access, and high efficiency.

Paper and other dry media can flow very well, they just have to be huge to do it. That makes them tough to package and sell. Hence, not much of this is on the market, and the reality is that the regular BHAF isn't much of an improvement in flow-- just in dirt holding capacity and sound

Think along the lines of the "Super BHAF" that XLR8R has, and your on to my thinking. Shoot, maybe I could make a huge panel out of four OEM filter frames? Four times the flow of stock while still having high efficiency? I like it! The packaging could get a bit tricky

if anyone is thinking about going to a BHAF, my opinion would be to just stick to the stock filter with a better designed box.
