Lessons Learned From Gauge Install
1. Read the posts - would have prevented 45 mins trouble shooting an inop boost gauge -
- something about you wont build boost while parked in your driveway.<br><br>2. Read the posts - darn near spent an extra hour tapping the air intake horn - only need to use the port next to the MAP sensor (only cost me 4 bucks for a 3/4 to 1/2 to 1/8 adaptor set up and 10 mins to install. Thanks for keeping me "smart"!<br><br>3. Read the posts - spent 4 hours
trying to find the right combination of 1/4 compression/1/4 NPT fittings for my EGT probe - the right probe would have prevented it.<br><br>4. Read the posts - understand I wont see 25 PSI of boost on a stock truck without a load going 50 miles an hour.<br><br>5. Read the posts - I tapped into the #5 fuse for lights/dimming - works like a champ.<br><br>6. Did I say read the posts?

The big one that helped me was someone mentioned the order that they hooked their pyro wiring up. When I did mine I hooked up the sensor first then the amp wiring. My pyro was stuck at 200. I read a post here and disconnected the amp wiring with the key off and reattached. Gauge zeroed out and works great.<br><br>Thanks by the way<br><br>Cole<br><br><br>

Dawg,<br><br>I was curious what you meant by the "right probe". I am 2/3 of the way through my gauge install and the major thing left to complete is my EGT probe. I would love to simplify the process if possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.<br><br>I have all Autometer UltraLite gauges if that makes any difference.<br><br>Cole,<br><br>I happen to live in Windsor also. Some one provided the following probe # in the Help forum:<br><br>Isspro make an adjustable probe that slides up and down in fitting, it is what I had to use. Part # R658<br><br>The probe I used came with the gauge. It had a 1/4 NPT fitting, but no adjustment. It was too long to fit in the exhaust manifold. I took the probe to a hardware store and was able to piece together a combination of fittings that worked just fine. The adjustable probe would have prevented the 4 hour delay though - again - READ THE POSTS

Dawg,<br><br>Thanks for the feedback on the probe. I will dobule-check, but I believe the probe that came with my gauge is adjustable for mounting depth.<br><br>I have been reading the posts quite a bit, but haven't found much on gauge installs. I have tried searching for info but never get much of a return. I have done searches that go back 360 days for gauge install and I get five hits.<br><br>Maybe I'm doing something wrong. ???

Hey guys, I to just bought Autometer gauges including the pyro and want to install this weekend. I spent a few minutes looking at the pyro probe and it looked kind of long to me too. Sounds like DawgII has done this install before. Any chance that you can tell us exactly what we will need?<br><br>Thanks!!!<br>Luis

That was my first install. I AM NOT THE EXPERT.
Took me 9 hours (including the fitting search and going down the wrong path initially for the boost install). I'm going to install the same guages on the wife's truck in two weekends (I hope it only takes 4 hours). The best way to get accurate instructions out IMHO is to take pictures at every critical point - and post them. If this hasn't happened by the time I do install #2, I'll gladly do it provided I can figure out how.BTW: the probe would have fit in a post-turbo installation. I ran into problems trying to find one that would fit in the manifold just upstream (2 inches) from the turbo inlet.
One thing puzzles me (ok, lots of stuff puzzles me): Most of the experienced power bombers recommend gauges prior to doing any modifications. I would have thought there would be a step by step, illustrated "how to" guide along with a list of tools, parts, etc on the site by now.

I had no problem installing the pyro probe with the supplied fitting. I put mine in the back half of the manifold port just before the turbo.<br><br>Chris

Hey Guys,<br><br>I installed all Autometer Ultralites on my 2001. Fuel Pressure, Transmission Temp and Pyro. <br><br>Pyro- The only thing I needed for Pre-Turbo install was a 1/8" NPT tap. I had the drill bit 3/8" I think.<br><br>Fuel Pressure- I had to have a local speed shop make up some -4an stainless hose for me. About 2 feet to go from the isolator to the VP-44 test fitting. This is the fitting on the injection pump with the little black cap on it. Remove the valve core with a valve core tool and screw the hose onto it. Make sure when you have the hose made you have them put 2 female ends on it. If you order the gauges from Summit Racing you can order a hose from them also. Thats all for that one, but when you take the valve core out of the fitting, some fuel will leak out so make sure and prime the system before trying to start. I didn't and had to crack some injectors open to bleed it.<br><br>Tranny Temp- I wanted mine in the out cooler line so I had to buy the manifold from Jannety racing. Then I needed a 3/8 compression short nipple and a 3/8 comp to 1/2 pipe bell to thread the red nut from the probe into. This one I am a little unsure about. I don't know if the probe is far enough into the fluid stream. I assume that fluid just fills that manifold and the fittings so maybe it is ok.
