K&N

Hey, I just got a K&N for my 2001 CTD... I have heard alot of good things and bad things about K&N letting small particles of dirt in, causing engine failure... Does anyone know how many miles I need to go before cleaning it??? Thanks

Don

About 10. Which should be all you need to run down to napa and order you up a BHAF. K&N might be great on a gasser but not on a diesel. Diesel's just inhale to much air.

I guess my K&N is a special secret model. No dirt. But the majority is down on them for our trucks, in part because most people overclean them, or don't get a good seal around the box.
I have a hard time throwing mine out when it offers 20,000 mile clean intervals, pretty good airflow and low cost.

Oh, and did I mention it cleans great?

Thumbs up

Some here like the K&N, some don't. I have run it 20,000, no issues, performs as advertised. I check for dirt on every oil change, as I pull the turbo boot to get at the filter. I think the main issue is to make sure it is sealed, run some grease around the edges. Other hint, do not clean/over oil, and some have sugested waiting 50k to clean. Seems they do better if you leave them alone. Since you own it, try it, You can always monitor the dirt, easy enough.
Some people knock the factory air box, but I think for stock application, it is OK.

I like my K&N. I run a cone style filter, and it flows a lot of air, and filters good enough for me. I never have found any dust, or oil in the intake tube. I also pull the tube every oil change, and not once has my finger gotten dirty from rubbing the inside of it.... I sleep fine at night.

I agree I have had no problems with my K&N for over 100 k. I just wonder if it is some that want to knock the king off of the throne.

My feeling is that quite a few of the people saying K&Ns are no good have never used one and are just parroting what they've read on the internet.

dad had one in his truck and that thing got nasty in a hurry. i cleaned it out and a short time after that, he put on a BHAF, and there was a major difference. faster spool, louder whistle, more boost. i wouldn't run one of them in my truck!
