I'm New!!!

Hey everyone! I just bought my first Diesel the other day. Its a 2001 24v. with 77k miles on it. I'm really loving the thing. I have loved diesels for as long as i can remember, but i'm not too knowlegable with the mechanic aspec of 'em. All i know is i'm not gonna due too much towing but i wanna make the thing FAST!!!
My First question to u guys is, what kind of tune up should i do to this thing before i start my upgrades? I know oil and oil filter, but what should i really think about doing at this stage of my trucks life? Not only do i want the badest truck in town but i want this thing to be Rock Solid Reliable!
Second In what stages should i do upgrades. Right now i was thinking, K&n intake and the Edge Juice Attitude pack. I already took out the muffler and resignator and replaced it with a section of 3". Is this a good start? Is there anything else i should do, or not do? I'll have around $1000 left over if there is anything else you would reccomend.

Thanks for your help guy>
Tristan

Gauges and 4" exhaust would be a good start.

Yup. So do Bully Dog and Quadzilla, and tons of others. Research a lot before you start dumping too much $$ into your truck. There is so much out there, it's confusing!
Good luck.

Ditch the k&n. And get a bhaf or a afe.

It will take 10,000 to 12,000 to get your truck "Bad". Im talkin tst pm3 smarty stack with twins. Head work, studs, water/meth, nos, upgraded tranny or clutch etc. Its very expensive to do it right. but if you do what i just said, it will be reliable, but your not going to get a 650 hp truck VERY reliable. Something is bound to break. You will have a 12 second truck (give or take a second, depending on your transmission) Dont expect to do this on the cheap.

and then somebody will ALWAYS have a little faster truck and a truck that looks just a litter better. No one can ever come out on top.

Are you under warrenty or are you your own warrenty station? Cuz if you tap the pump wire with the juice you will void the warrenty on your injector pump. It'll still be good for 60+ hp without the wire tap.

After guages I'd say fuel system upgrades should be on top of the list over an intake or exhaust. The main concern on these trucks is the $1200 vp44 injector pump which uses fuel pressure for cooling. If the lift pump fails it can take the ip out with it, but if you swap out the lift pump for something better the dealership might not uphold the warrenty if you need a new vp44.

Turn the key on without starting the truck then cycle back off, on, off, on then any codes will show on your odometer.

I was in the same boat as you a month ago, i bought the juice after a little research, works great, then i found this place,go ahead and spend some money to upgrade your fuel system, and then get the edge juice so you can have the gauges(if you are set on that box). I did it the other way around and it was disapointing not to be able to mash the gas on 5x5 without the chance of ruining my vp44(but were fixed up now). Fuel system is the most important(gauges too) if you are looking for future wallet robbing power. Also if you have an auto, dont tap the pump until you get at least a good torc. converter and a good valve body,or it wont belong and you will be in the dredded dead tranny gang.

if its a auto truck next place you need to look at is the trans . ie converter and vavle body atleast . if you beat on your truck alot it might be a good idea to do a full trans with atleast a billet input.then some injecters and turbo also get the hot code for that juice. now if its a stick get you a good twin disk clutch , hot code for the juice ,injecters and turbo

Easy there buddy, not everybody would want a dual disk clutch. Those are for hot rods and sled pullers.

do the tranny first don't even think about the other stuff yet. these trucks are no fun if your tranny can't hold the power. i would never buy a single disc clutch i've seen my 2 friends smoke 4 singles in a year. south bend and haisley make some good DD clutches for the street

Thanks for all your replies. I amd fully aware that gauges are a MUST, I decided that i'm gonna go with manual gauges being that they're more reliable. Is there a certain brand you guys would recommend over others?

Also what performance module would you recommend? Edge, TST banks... or?

Thanks again for your help.
