Hy35 Vs Hx35 Pics
I just swapped out my HY35 for a HX35. Before the swap when doing research I found it nearly impossible to find any good pics to see the differance between the two turbo's. Here are a few pics I took to see the differance between the two.

Pleas if anyone could add any info on exact dimensions of the turbo's that would be great. Hope this helps some.

Just get a tape or a ruler? You can measure the inducer on both turbos for the compressor and turbine. Then remove the compressor housing, you measure the exducer on the turbine/compressor. After that its just housing sizes. For kicks and giggles should put a BTH-3b or S475 beside them both
. I think that the HX-35 is around the 58-60mm inducer size. The HY turbine just similar with alot smaller housings. I remember my HY-35 having a double volute. I just took my new twins out for a rip, I barely got to 1000 deg's egt and 50 psi of boost. Not bad for my little sticks, set on kill there was a little smoke on intial spool-up but after that it was clean.

The sizes I have on those two are...
HY-35.. 54/58/9
HX-35.. 56/58/12
I think the HY might be 54/56 just cause what I saw from size differance when I had my swap goin. But the sizes above are what I have writtin down here.

I chipped the truck a month ago and noticed I could spike my EGT's no problem.......1500 degree's in a snap. Crusing speed temps were around 750 to 850. I was worried then what they would be like pulling as I just purchased a 35FT holiday trailer. Those temps were just truck alone.
After the swap crusing speed temps dropped quite a bit. 120Km/h....temps 650-730 degree's. I will find out this weekend how it does pulling.
I did drop in boost pressure by about 3 PSI. But she run's a lot cooler now which I like. It also has a more noticable turbo whistle as well.

yup, a direct swap. as you notice in the pictures there are 2 different exhaust flanges, one has 2 bolt holes the other used a band clamp to hook to the down pipe. the exhaust flanges are interchangeable, just reuse which ever you need to hook to your down pipe.
I second the lower egt compared to a hy. good upgrade IF you get a HX for cheap

What year trucks used the HY35? Wasn't it the later model 2ND GENs with the 24 valve engine and automatic transmission? Would that be a good turbo to put on an older 2ND GEN 12 valve with manual trans to spool up fast (or just too restrictive on the compressor side of the turbo)??

The 40 is a bolt on swap but a new down pipe is required....they use the same down pipe most aftermarket turbos use....personally I wouldent use a HX40 I would find a hybrid 35/40 or a S300 turbo
