HX35 turbo with an automatic
HX35 turbo with an automatic
I'm thinking about swapping my HY35 for an HX35 on my '01 w/ auto. I'm not necessarily looking for more boost, but I am looking for more air. With my current setup and the HY35, my egt's get to the high side of comfortable pretty easily when I'm towing. I'm currently making about 32 - 34 psi with the HY35 which I know is already on the upper fringes of it's efficiency curve. Will I gain anything in the towing department swapping to the larger exhaust housing?
Absolutely! Should notice a big difference.... just what you are looking for. If "32-34 psi" is your max boost at WOT than the HX-35 will be just the thing..... unless planning on more fuel in the future.
I've been told the only reason Dodge went to the HY in 01 and 02 was for EPA and pollution control.
I've driven stock auto's with an HX-35 and it's much nicer. Spools near as fast and runs seriously cooler.

Well, I would like to add some bigger sticks in the future..... but, for the time being, I need to lower the egt's. My neighbor down the street has an HX35 that he is willing to trade straight across for my HY35, so for now, it would be a no cost improvement. If I ever get bigger sticks, I'd have to look at a turbo upgrade at that time as well. All that stuff costs money though....
Oh... and I was under the impression that they went to the HY35 in the auto trucks for a faster spool-up to improve drivability w/ the auto.

I did the swap on my 02. I put the HX35 on, a BD exhaust manifold and 4" exhaust all at the same time.......tons of difference.
I didn't even notice a difference in spool time, huge drop in EGT's though.
Not a "fix all", but a good cheap improvment if you're not looking for big HP numbers.

What year of truck is the turbo off? Is the truck a 12v or 24v truck? Its a decent improvement over the HY turbo. Check the turbo out good, then run away. Why does he want to use a HY turbo? Crazy stuff
Don't really know... but he live a few doors down from me and I see no reason why he would want to screw me when I know where he lives.
He's into diesel performance and has all sorts of stuff sitting around. I see some of his friends stop by ever now and then with built pulling trucks on trailers. He seems to know his stuff.
He says he has a friend that is looking for an HY.... He has an HX and if he trades me, he will have a HY sourced for his friend. As long as the HX checks out, who am I to question why he wants it or what he does with it.

if your geting the hx 35 for free or for really cheap then do it. if not save your money. why? hx-35s do not really have that much more air. add like 90hp sticks to em and they are easily out of there map
