I would like to stack the new quad XZT with my xzillaraider (120hp fueling box) and then put some mild injectors like 275s on. Can i get away with an hx-35 or will it get waay too toasty? How about an HX-35 with a different housing ? How about an hx-40? Quick spoolup and drivability is definitely important. I rarely drive with the fueling box on the highest setting except for the odd rip just for the fun of it...

I tow a 5000# boat but mostly just haul 2 snowmobiles on the deck. I finally have the funds for some mods but i'm completely ignorant when it comes to choosing a turbo and i don't want to spend a ton of money, a used turbo would be nice if anybody is selling?

 

Definately need to loose the HY-35!

An HX-35/14 might be OK! Still a bit toasty with everything turned up!
A 35/40 hybrid will do well up to 400 HP... but the BD Super B would be better!

I'll look around for a 35/40 hybrid, so i assume i need an hx-40 downpipe for that? I would rather have a little quicker spoolup than be able to run with everything turned up... I could probably get away with even bigger injectors than 275s?

 

Hybrid's normaly use stock exaust elbow and down pipe, should clamp right on.

 

A hybrid will give you an HX-40 compressor with an HX-35 turbine/hot side, your 9cm housing is too small to just upgrade to a bigger compressor wheel, but if you upgrade to a 14 or 16cm housing you might be good without the bigger injectors, if you do te hot side and compressor upgrade to an HX-40 style, then you would probably be ok with 300's or maybe bigger. Your 12v's over my head, so somebody else will give you a better input shortly.

 

Where can i find one of these hybrids or housings? is it something i can do myself to a stock hx-35? from what i've seen you need an HX-35 and piers or dodgezilla will do the conversion ?

 

The hy35 is not upgradeable. You'll have to find an HX35 to upgrade and since your gonna have to buy that and then buy the upgrades I recommend just getting a new turbo such as the Bd super B. I'd stay away from the hx40's cause they are kinda laggy and they aren't exactly known for their longevity. You also might want to talk to Industrial Injection or High Tech Turbo and see which turbos they recommend.

 

Yea, I got a Super B...Really nice turbo, spoolup is almost exactly the same as the HX35 but it has a 14cm housing on it, and it flows better.

 

buddy, what are you doing with this truck? You draq racing? Towing heavy? You can drive a truck with that size injectors and use a fueling box. If you drive your truck hard, think upgrade turbo. If your bucks down go the HX-35 or hydreed route. If you have money buy a turbo or use your foot to monitor the egt's. I've towed on a Hy turbo with a fueling box and 90's injectors at 10k. You just have to be smart about it.

 

I don't race other than the odd WOT run for the fun of it i mostly just want the truck to be able to power up hills with snowmobiles or a small boat with passing power to spare... I would imagine an hx-35 would be a significant improvement over my HY? I figure the 275s would be a good injector since they would a bit more towing power without too much higher egts..

How good is your tranny? Once you start running a box and injectors your gonna make more torque. RV275 should work well in a stock truck regardless of turbo sizing. It come down to hard you want to work your truck. Tow heavy watch the pyro and the coolant temp. I hated towing running mach 6's and twins. Too hot, yes you can do it. Melting stuff isn't cool. If you run hot lots your gonna see valve seat wear and head cracks. How much boost you pulling? A stocker turbo should be in the 35psi area. Its been a couple of days since I ran a stock turbo. If you want more top end power buy a bigger turbo

 

A PDR35 with a 14 cm housing will do you fine.

I run one with Mach 1.75's and a Smarty on 7 and I can get over 1200 when I'm hammering on it. It's kind of the best of both worlds, sure you can go to a bigger turbo for a few $$$ more but this one will work fine for your application.

I was thinking the same thing. Mach 1.5 to 2's, depending how much hot rodding you do. Your gonna make about 800+lbs of torque might even break into the 900's. Nice combo running PDR35X. A stock tranny with a aftermarket TC, might be pushed to its limits towing. Empty your ok. You have a pusher pump or big lift pump? 4in exhaust would be nice for controling egt's
