Question How much lift for 315/75/16 tires?

Hi,

I have just purchased a 99 Dodge BR2500 with a 5.9 diesel and an automatic. I would like to add bigger tires to compensate for the 4.10 gears to get better fuel mileage as well as make the truck look better. Here are my questions.....

1. How big of a tire can I put under it while it is still completely stock?

2. How big of a tire can I put under it if I install the 2" leveling kit?

3. How much does the truck need to be lifted to put 315/75/16 tires under it?

4. If I lift the truck can I use a body lift, or do I need a spring lift?

5. Or would I just be better of to put in a set of 3.55 gears? What difference can I expect in my fuel mileage with the 4.10's as opposed to the 3.55's?

I know I would have to have the computer reset to read right on the speedometer.
Sorry for all the questions, but with diesel being over $2.00 a gallon, the mileage is an issue for me. My camper is only about 6,000 lbs so any of these options should still provide plenty of power for me. Thanks for your help!

Dan

well, on mine, i had to do some light trimming of my inner fender plastic in the front to be able to run qr78 16's (ntw in wheeling says these equate to 36 x12 16's-and mud tread with very deep lugs as compared to all terrains ). that was just to run on the steet--they will rub when i articulate off road -have to be very careful. if it were my fathers 2000 ram, he would have to get at a minimum of the leveling kit in the front and then trim -his sits much lower in the front and i guess it s because he doesnt have the snow plow prep that i do? ? so , if you are just going to 35's you may still have to do both depending on your front height. theres a tire site that you can go on that has calculators and will automatically do the math for ''i f i run this size of tire stock, and my ring and pinion is ''x'', what will my ring and pinion effectively change to by adding tire size "x" . they also will calculate what you need to change your ring and pinion to if you want to return to the stock range with your new tires. i thinks its either tirerack.com or tyresinternational.com my ring and pinion is 3.55 but when the 36's are on -its the same effect as running my stock 245 75 16's and changing the ring and pinion to like a 3.08 or 3.23-cause the tires are taller.

I had my 315's on before I got my 3" suspension lift and they rubbed a bit at a full turn. Articulation was fine off-road. Now with the 3" lift I don't even worry about rubbing anymore.

Thanks for the replies. It would be great if all I needed to do was add a 2 inch leveling kit and change the wheels and tires! 315/75/16's with the 4.10's would get me down to about a 3.55 gear level wouldn't it? Thanks!

I haven't had any problems rubbing with 315/70/17's on 17x9's. I'm also running 4.10 gears. The mileage is about the same with the 285's or the 315's. I average around 14.95851252 MPG on the 285's and 15.19063707 MPG with the 315's. All at 600+ HP on a daily driver.

DMP, I've got the setup you want. I've got 315/75/16 BFG's. I put a 2" leveler on it. I put the 315's on the stock rim. I rub the lower control arms pretty bad from lock to lock but I've gotten used to not turning it that hard. Soon, I'm going to get aftermarket extended control arms which are going to be an inch longer which will fix my rubbing problem and make the truck handle better. With the bigger tires, you're going to notice a drop in power. I put an EZ on my truck and got my gas milage back and then some. Recalibrating the speedo also helped my milage. Hope this helps

I simple levelling kit will fit 315s with the proper wheel specs.

You want a 8-8.5" wide wheels with +20mm (2nd gen) to +40mm (3rd gen) offset.

The high positive offset it the reason Dodges are hard to properly fit with aftermarket wheels.
