How much boost

Can someone tell me how much boost my 02 should make? With the edge turned off it struggles to make 14-15 pounds. With it on, the boost comes up faster, but doesnt go much above 15-16 pounds.

With the automatic, its wastegated at around 20-22psi. Sounds like you have a boost leak or the wastegate is sticking open possibly. 14-16 psi is pretty low numbers!

the reason you get boost faster with the edge is that it's adding more fuel, and the reason you can't build higher boost is that the wastegate opens at 17-18psi. you can put a adjustable boost elbow on it and it should build up to 35-40 pounds at at wot. much higher than this and you increase drive pressure on a stock turbo, which raises egt's. , they sell them on ebay for like 10 bucks, or you can spend $200 dollars for a wastegate from bd which opens at a higher pressure, more expensive, but less chance you will overspool your turbo(worst sound in the world). you want to see your truck hurtin, drive it an 1/8 a mile with no turbo .

Can't use a boost elbow on an 02 automatic. It's a "hard line" wastegate actuator and needs to be locked out with a turnbuckle.!

If I remember correctly... I use to get 20-21 psi on my stock turbo, before putting the turnbuckle on.
I would bet on a boost leak also.

Possibly a boost leak to the gauge?

RJ- what is the best way to find out if the wastegate is stuck open? Or to find if it a leak to the guage?

Wastegates being stuck open are VERY rare.

Hey RJ. After figuring out what ihe boost problem is, the next thing is a fuel sending upgrade. What is the set-up you are running? Also, right now my boost line is plumbed into the elbow right before the intake. Is there a better spot?

If your refering to the line for the boost gauge... should be plumbed into the back side of the air "horn" .... just before the air enters the block. Sounds like that's where you have it?

I used Scottys Max fuel flow system... up to 425 hp, where it would start to pull fuel pressure down to 4-5 psi. Great system, reasonable cost. See here... http://www.scottysystems.ca/smartfuelsystems.html

With higher HP, I went with the FASS system. More expensive but will hold FP within 1 psi of idle up to 700 hp!! http://www.dieselpp.com/

Good luck

Yes, that is where it is plumbed. Any way to test system to find a possible leak?

I went to Home Depot and bought a rubber 4"-3" adapter, installed a 3" PVC cap, secure with a hose clamp, drilled and tapped the center of the cap to accept a brass fitting to which I attached a pressure gauge, then a ball valve and finally an air line fitting. Attach the open 4" end of the adapter to the inlet of the turbo using a hose clamp, then with the valve closed attach an air line from a compressor. Open the valve slowly until that gauge shows 20psi. Spray all of the connections for the intercooler, including the intercooler itself, with soapy water and watch for bubbles.

Secure leaks.

Here's a more detailed parts list for building a pressure tester.

The tester is as follows: 4"x3" fernco plumbing adapter, reduce the 3" side with 3" to 3/4" threaded pvc bushing, male/male 3/4" x3/4"x 2" nipple, 3/4"x1/2"x1/2" T, pipe pressure gauge to (1) 1/2" side, place supply air nipple in other 1/2" side(grainger has supply valves with 1/8" NPT). Pull the intake hose from the turbo, slip 4" fernco on, and pressurize to 20 psi(Slowly).
