ya, the wastegated housing is kinda like that. i think it's to a MUCH smaller (problematic) scale though. the turbo is designed to be used with that small of a housing. i think that these vgt's aren't supposed to be used with a housing that small except under very certain circumstances. i'm not saying that's a fact or anything though. just from looking at the housing sizes on different fixed vane turbos and how they relate to the compressor size. which, on these 55's i have, are pretty darn big. i do like your thinking on the blow off valve though. definitely easy. i've got a buddy who is a electrical engineer who wants to help on this project though. already have an E/P regulator and he's got some kind of monster PLC that he wants to donate to the cause. might be big enough to run two???? we'll see. btw, my hy35v has the same actuation as yours. just the big ones are air operated.

dave

ps. when you get that far along, i'd love to know what the dimensions on that compressor are.

I thought the Garretts were using this style of controlling...

On the Holeset you can also get air activated control.. more like the actuator on the wastegates.. then you can add a manual control...
Dean Morehead has been running one for a few yrs.. but I haven't seen or heard from him in a while..

I personally know of two 24v trucks which have had an air pressure operated Holset VGT mounted on them. One out of Texas, and the another here in Utah. Both had fairly serious control issues.

The one in Utah over spooled the turbo, which exploded and threw chunks through the hood, firewall and dash. Lucky there wasn't a passenger when that happened. I don't know what ever happened to the one in Texas.

First off, they need a 100 psi air supply. The one in Utah used a modified three level Edge box for control. Edge was doing the testing, themslves. The one in Texas was controlled using a custom built box built by the owner. Having brain cramps and can't remember exactly how the air pressure was controlled, or who the Texas owner was. That's been 4 years ago and the turbos were $2400. I believe the air was controlled on the turbo, itself.

the ones i have only need 45 psi to fully extend. don't really matter though, i'm going to build an on board air system that's good for 120+ with lots of flow.

BT.. the truck in TX was Dean's truck.. last time I talked to him he was on his second turbo... over sped the first one... He was having someone wright the program to control the actuator... but he also had a manual control. I haven't heard from him in over a yr...
