Variable Geometry Turbos for Dodge Cummins

For those of you interested in variable geometry turbocharging for the late model Dodge Cummins, be sure to watch Xtreme 4x4 on the Spike network the weekends of March 5-6 and March 12-13. The show airs both Saturday and Sunday at 1:00pm Eastern. You will see a variable geometry turbo installed on a 2005 truck.

Yes, this is a Banks product. It is a Banks-Garrett hybrid variable nozzle turbo that is capable of 500 HP and 1000 lb-ft and is still very responisive for day to day use. We call it the ShapeShifter.

Variable geometry - what exactly does this mean when applied to Turbo's?
I know on a ships propeller "Variable pitch" means the pitch changes throughout the length of the blade. "controllable pitch" means the picth of the blade is mechanically changed by rotating the blade which is used commonly on Navy gas turbine ships.

Thanks in advance

Probably something along the lines like the turbos in the 6.0L PSD and the LLY D-Max.

Peter,

Since your still doing R&D on this turbo, is there any consideration to offering something pretty much bullet proff with titanium shaft and maybe ceramic ball-bearings? It would make a nice option for those who want the best, IMO.

Pat,
There is no such thing as a bullet proof turbo.

I think the 2001 and later VW Jetta TDI has a VVTurbo and they seem to work good. 1.9L engine on a toy car not a 5.9L truck but it might work fine.

There are two different ways (that I've read about) to do a variable geometry turbo. One is like you state where the pitch of the vanes shifts. The other has a turbo with fixed vanes and the area of the vanes that is exposed to the exhuast gas is controlled by a sleeve (for lack of a better word) that moves back and forth allowing more or less vane area to be exposed.

I'm not sure how the Banks setup is done, but either way I'm sure there will have to be an add on controller for the turbo. I'm interested to see how their deal installs and works.
