How do you tell when your tranny needs a rebuild?

I can tell my tranny is hurting a bit, it bucks and jumps between 1st and second when i'm starting from a stop of driving at low speeds. Also before torque converter lockup it REALLY seems to slip. If floor it in 1st second or third sometimes it hooks up and goes but a lot of the time my rpms jump way up, the engine makes a lot of noise and i don't seem to be going anywhere fast.

My plan is to put in a Goerend triple disk converter and valve body. The previous owner re-built the tranny last about 60000km ago but cheaped out in the VB and torque converter deptartment. Not sure if the thing needs a full rebuild or just freshening?

Do the whole thing. If it slips the clutches will be junk, they do not take a lot of abuse.

So even if i replace the vb and tc i could still run into problems with my tranny down the road? Its just that the built tranny is 3200 and i could get an nice goerend vb, tc in there for 1600 or so...

I'm searching for the word to describe how my tranny is acting. It may be the same "bucking" symptom you describe. During normal acceleration from a stop, the tranny would feel like it's shifting into 2nd and gives the truck a noticeable jolt but then it remains in 1st. It shifts into 2nd later normally. It's as if the bands/clutches are grabbing when they're not supposed to. One time (with O/D off) it even popped out of 3rd gear when I got on it a little. It's driving me nuts.

yep, thats exactly what mine does... I've never had a problem once the torque converter locks up and i'm not sure if my bands need adjusting or what the problem is exactly.
