High EGT's and black smoke

I noticed recently my EGT's are higher than normal under similar conditions and the truck now blows black smoke very easily. Prior to this it was difficult to get much smoke. With the comp box off it will still smoke more than it used to. Now when it goes into overdrive and I am accelerating I get quite a bit of black smoke. My EGT's hit 1300 fairly easily and if I am towing a heavy load I can get into the 1500 to 1600 range any time I have to go up a hill.

Any suggestions as to what the cause(s) may be?

Thanks for any and all help.

Do you notice boost being down a bit?
Do you hear any hissing from under the hood ??

Could be your lower intercooler boot has spent too much time rubbing the inner fender liner/wheelwell and its got a hole. Mine worked iteself into such a state so gradually and over such a length of time I didnt even notice it, until it finally became a chore to drive without smoke, and I finally noticed the drop in peak boost.

High egts and smoke does sound like a boost leak. A 3" pvc plug with a valve stem can be used on the turbo outlet to pressurise the system. Spray it down with soapy water and look for bubbles if the leak isn't immediatly obvious. I tried this recently with a 4" cap and cac hose on the turbo inlet and it seemed to work pretty good for a $5 in parts plus what I had sitting around

Thanks, I'll check for boost leaks. I have not noticed any changes in boost levels though. With no load I can hit 1500 and 1600* with WOT for short bursts.

Air filter is good and very clean. What it seems to come down to is not enough air for the amount of fuel being delivered.

That definately gives me some where to start looking.

Thanks for pointing me in hopefully the right direction!

Found the problem. First rubber hose after the turbo split right at the top clamp. Easy enough to see but you guys let me know where to look.

It seems we always get first rate suggestions on this site. Thanks to all who replied.

Wish I could attend but I'm in BFE, VA. Not too far from Roanoke/Lynchburg area. And the wife already has plans for that weekend at the lake.

I have 2 stock rubber boots sitting here if you want them. They are both straight boots. Let me know & I'll ship them out.
