Getting rust off chrome

I'm in the middle of polishing my wheels and center caps up right now. So far the wheel looks great. Spent an hour wet sanding it with 2000 grit paper and now I just need to take a buffing compound and buff all the swirl marks out. Anways. I'm ready to start on the chrome center caps. How would I go about getting the rust out without damaging the chrome on it? It looks like just surface rust. Should I just wet sand it with the 2000 grit and then polish it back up or what? Thanks for all the help yall. No way I could have done this without yall.

I use 0000 steel wool on my chrome bumpers and it works great. Bumpers are steel and if your center caps are the same it should work. If they are plastic, I'm not sure I would try it.

I use this stuff called "clean cut". its a polishing compound and will clean rust off chrome easy. It comes in gallon jugs and u can get it at most paint or accessory shops. If u think u dont need the whole gallon, wait till u use it

If they were aluminum, there wouldn't be any rust on them.

I bought that Flitz stuff off the TV and it works great. In fact I bought more. Talking about easy to take off rust. I had my stacks looking new in about 10 minutes and not a sctatch on them. It even took off 3 years of break dust like nothing I have used before.

I believe a Coke and some aluminum foil will do the job.

What do I use as a lubricant for the steel wool or do I just polish the chrome with it straight?
