Fuel System upgrade for Drag Comp?

I got a used drag comp for a good price the other day.My original plan was to do a fuel system upgrade before the box but I went ahead and bought it.So you guessed it,there goes my saved money for the fuel system. So I am going to run the comp in EZ mode for a little while. Will I need a pusher pump or can I get away without for a while just set on EZ?I don't have gauges in yet, should be in this weekend. They are on backorder. So I don't know my fuel pressure.I have a brand new vp-44 so I don't want to fry it.And,when I do the upgrade which way should I go?I was wanting to get by a little cheaper than a FASS.So what are my other options? What will provide enough fuel to run the comp with the wire tapped? Thanks for the help.

Do a search on here for the Holley Blue fuel pump. That should net you some suggestions. If your gauges are supposed to be in this weekend I'd wait until you get them installed.

Do you think I could run it in EZ mode with the stock fuel system?I don't know what my pressure is,but if its good can I run it without a upgrade for a little while?

You can run it in ez mode with no other mods and be just fine. The f.a.s.s 2 fuel system is worth every penny. I've been down the road of holley pusher pumps and they don't seem to last. They are not designed for diesel fuel, they are designed as a racing pump, not to be ran continuously.

The BD pump works good, comes with everything you need, goes inline and uses the stock lift pump also. If your stock pump is weak or bad, it is more cost effective to use the FASS 1 system than to buy a new stock pump and a pusher pump.

As "Big Blue" pointed out, do a search on "Holley Blue Pumps" and you should
find and see alot of information.

I disagree with the other members assessment of the Holley Red/Blue Pumps.
I have been running a Holley Red on my 2002 Dodge CTD for over one (1) year
now with absolutely no problems whatsoever!! My son is running a Holley Blue
on his 2004 Dodge CTD CR with the same results. We are BOMBED pretty heavily
(my son is running twin turbos) and run our trucks very hard. You can get the
Holley Blue or Red Pumps at any "Advance Auto Parts" Stores in the U.S. My
Holley Red cost about $90.00 and they give you a one (1) year free replacement
warranty on them should anything go wrong. As pointed out by the other members
the FASS Fuel Systems seem to be doing well, but I have heard of a couple failures.
They are also pretty pricey IMO. I strongly suggest you install AT LEAST an underhood
mechanical FP gauge to see what you have there even with the EZ. On my 2002
Dodge CTD with just the Edge EZ on it, my fuel pressure was going below 5lbs.
According to "who you talk to" at Dodge or Cummins the "bottom line" for the fuel
pressure on the 2nd Generation 24 valve engines with the VP-44, seems to be
"no less than 5 lbs." IMO, running it below that number or near "0" only speeds
up eventual failure of the VP-44 fuel pump.

Hope this helps "caleb!" P.M. me or post if i can help you anymore.

I've been running a drag comp and 275's for a couple years now and I still have the stock lift pump and one of Scotty's big fuel line kits.

cruise pressure is about 14psi and WOT on 5x5 draws it down to about 9 psi

I do believe you can buy scotty's stuff right here from the DTR store .........

No matter how many pumps you install or how strong they are,the pumps will only move the amount of fuel that the fuel module in the tank will let thru. The fuel module is very restrictive,is only designed for the fuel flow to support 235hp.

So what can I do about that?I never really thought about that. And It sounds like the Holley pump might be a good way to go as John P mentioned.I was wanting to get by with out spending a huge amount.BTW the gauges will be in before the comp goes in so I will have some readings and maybe I can ask more specific questiones.Any other advice would be great. Thanks

There are many different ways to modifiy the fuel module,I'll tell you how I improved mine.I removed the bed of the truck, removed the module Drilled a hole thru the top of the module fastened a 3/4'' pipe to a bulkhead #10 fitting which supplies the pump. The only problem with this setup is the pickup is suceptible to sloshing which can draw air when the level is low.The OE fuel module is designed to keep fuel around the pickup even when the tank is low on fuel. That is why it is really restrictive,it has a check valve arrangement which is part of the restriction. This is possibly one of the reasons we have a high rate of failures on lift pumps and injection pumps on modifiyed trucks.

I am running -8 stainless steel braided line from the fuel tank all the way up
to the VP-44. In addition to that, I am running the larger banjo bolts on all
fittings. It is very similar to what "dodgeam" described that Scotty is selling.
My 2002 is putting down 486 H.P. and my son's 2004 Dodge CTD CR 556 H.P.
on #2 diesel. Setting the fuel system up that way (-8 line, larger banjo bolts,
Holley or FASS Pusher Fuel Pump) will give you all the fuel and pressure you
will need "caleb." I see about 18-22 at idle with my Holley Red and never
get below 13-14 even under WOT conditions. I know that Scotty would
give you similar feedback on this. FWIW, on my son's 2004 with the Holley
Blue, the larger fuel lines and banjo bolts he sees about 26 @ idle and never
gets below 14-15lbs. I have had this system on my 2002 for over two years
now.
