Free mods safe?

I just bought my first CTD, its a '95 4X4 auto with 92k miles. Its all stock right now but I'm saving my money to get a better converter, in the meantime I was wondering if turning the starwheel and sliding the plate forward would be safe mods to do and not hurt the trans. I'm not sure how much power is gained by doing those two things or how much you can move them, I've seen several guys that have them as far forward as they'll go. Would that be ok to do with a stock trans? I'm just looking for some free mods I can do to get a little extra "safe" power until I get the trans beefed up a little. Then after that I'll probably be looking for some injectors and dv's. Also if we move the afc and plate all the way will it smoke too much if I'm WOT? Thanks

Some of the safest things (for egt and stock tranny) you can do are bump the timing to 16*, get the valves adjusted, get a good cool air intake like Scotty or AFE, get a good 4" exhaust system. If you move the plate forward, you need to at least have a pyrometer, also with the starwheel you just have to know you may speed up needing that tranny rebuild. I've turned mine up a good bit but I know the risk and my tranny is solid now. Another great free mod is do a search for "Free GSK" , but still I reccomend wait till you have a pyrometer. It lets you adjust the governor so it will pull hard till about 3300 rpm. It does not really endanger your stock tranny. WELCOME ABOARD and have fun !

ps Smoke too Much ?? Thats why we have diesels !

I would do gauges before anything else... The stock exhaust will move enough air to cool signifcantly more power than stock...

And "to much smoke" is very subjective. I can roll it thick, or drive smoke free. It is all in how you work the pedal. And what you may think in perfectly fine, I may think is way to much.

ON EDIT: Fix your KDP before anything else!!! Do a search if you are unsure of what it is...

It is like a 100, with a little flat spot before the slope.Maybe an eight of an inch. And the flat spot at the top is the same as the deepest flat spot on the stock plate. None of the pictures I have are very good...

Hope this helps you picture it...

ON EDIT: Gotta credit Willy91 with the name...

well the stock plate is just that.....stock
the #10 is a good plate that defuels up top so that might be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your situation
the #100 has the same bottom end slope as the #10 but it does not defuel up top, many people run these and like them
the #0 plate does not defuel at all it just bombards the pump with fuel and tends to be a little smoky

To answer your question on wich ones best we really need to know more about what you do with the truck.

I couldn't find that picture anywhere... Thanks for digging it up. I can't remember my flickr password. It didn't occur to me to look for the thread. That was by far the best pic of the plate of the 20 I took...

Well I am wanting to change out the transmission and then get as much power out of this thing as I can so that I can smoke the little ricers here around base and take on my cousins Titan. I would also like to go to twins on my truck.

deffinently the 100, or 0 then. The #0 would give you the greatest HP gain as long as you have enough air to run it and twins will help a lot. The #100 would be a little less powerful but will be easier to control the smoke levels. If you're not worried bout smoke go for a #0.....Just my 2 cents

***** has it right on the money

count on this tho, if you do any severe bombing your stock trans, whether auto or manual aint gonna like u, i know it from first hand experience. The 100 and the zero are the two most aggressive plates, but the 100 is a bit milder on the lower side due to its J curve.... the zero plate, is just flat. but still packs a good wallop, infact its the most agressive plate u can get... or make for free...

The best and foremost investment u should make is your gauges, a pyrometer at the minimum.. These guys have already told u what needs to be said so alas, carry on..

Thanks!

Rick

Or you can grind your own, thats how I got my plate. It's easy, just keep it cool. Do a search for plat grinding. Look for a thread started by gunracer. It goes in the injection pump

ON EDIT: I noticed you have a 24v... No fuel plate for you just computers.
