Well. Went to scheid this weekend, and asked them if they would time my truck at 16 degrees. They said sure, so i brought it in the next day and they timed it at 16 degrees with a timing light. It was set at 12 degrees when they started. My truck has always had a miss/pop at high rpm's when warm, and at a lot lower rpm's when cold. I was hoping timing would fix this, but he told me it was a fuel pressure problem. Anyway, i let them go ahead,a nd time it, and pulled it out of the shop, and got it warmed up some. It used to start popping about 2900rpm's, so after i got it completley warmed up it revved to about 3300rpm's before any smoking/popping occured. It still does it around 2k when you first start it, but its much better, and i think maybe i might have low pressure out of my lift pump causing that. Took it out for a test drive. Punched it from 0-65mph. Before the timing I could have my pyro pegged on 1500 degrees, and i know it was still climbing. Now i can do the same thing, and EGT's will slowly rise to about 1200 degrees, and then just barley creep up to 1300, and basically quit climbing after that. Also noticed a little better power in the higher rpm's. Now. The best mileage i had ever gotten was about 18, and i usually get 15-16mpg driving around town. Filled up right before we left for home, and filled up when i got home, and i got 22MPG!! I couldnt believe it and neither could dad. I drove fairly easy ont he way home, but we were running 75-78mph mostly, and i was still playing around enough. Dad told me if i could get my truck to get 20mpg even once, he would turn his up(fuel plate), so i guess he has to get a fuel plate/gauges now, or at least slide his plate forward. He gets 20mpg consistently, but has never gotten 22. 21 is his best so far, but i have higher gearing. I still dont know for sure what kind of mileage i will get with normal stop and go, but if it raises it the 4mpg it did on the interstate that would be awesome. Either way, im VERY glad with my decision to get my truck timed at 16 degrees. Runs better al around, better economy, and lower EGT's, all for $112 which will easily pay for itself if i keep getting better mileage. I will try to report back with stop and go driving mileage. I have a question for some of you guys though. Is timing with the light as accurate as pulling the D.V., and doing plunger lift and all that? Only took him about 45 minutes to do, and looked fairly simple. Anyway. I would never go back!

I personally cant tell that its any louder at all. I have heard it would be, but maybe thats only when you get up around 20 degrees or so? It wouldnt bother me if it was louder, but i dont think it is.

how do they time a diesel with a light i mean ive done it on a gasser but with my timing light it also has to be hooked to a spark plug wire how do they do this on a diesel? I know people do it all the time but im just curious.

Instead of picking up electrical pulses the clamp picks up fuel pulses.

To advance the timing on a diesel you just pull off the cover on the front of the timing case that covers the gear on the injection pump, and then take of the nut/washer and somewhow they know how to set it at what you want, but im kinda lost on that part. Anyway. To advance it, you just loosen upo the gear, and spin it ont he shaft till it gets where you want it, then tighten the gear back up so it wont spin on the shaft when you start it.
