Do you have any ideas on how to modify a 2500 Laramie Ext Cab to a 4 independent door configuration?

You mean with four normal-swing doors like a crew cab?
Well I suppose the easiest answer is to sell your truck and buy one of those new Mega Cab trucks, but that's probably not an option.

Well I'm sure it can be done, but you're talking about hundreds of hours in custom body work, and thousands of dollars. You would almost have to cut the cab in half, extended it, and add the rear doors. I assume your truck is a 2nd generation 94-02, and Dodge never made a full crew cab, so I don't know what you would do for rear doors. Don't forget you also would have to cut and extend the frame, and the rest of the chassis parts. I'd say it would be easier, and cheaper to find a factory made crew cab, either 1st or 3rd generation.

 

Well I know it can be done. we got in, at our wrecking yard, a 97 Dodge Cummins 2500 that was converted to a full crew cab by a very reputable custom vehicle shop in California. The truck was wrecked bad in the front but we still have the nice cab with the custom rear doors and everything still together. After looking at that Bayerauto.com website, I don't think I can afford to even look at these trucks, probably twice as much as a new Mega Cab. . .

Not really, the last Mega cab I looked at was about 55K, loaded CTD leather 4X4, etc.

I spoke with Bayer about building my quad into a 4 door plus the quad cab and they quoted me about 15K. Since my truck is paid for - the Bayer conversion will save me about 40K.

there is a 2nd generation 4 door runnin around the Boise area, i see it from time to time, it is sharp, but seems that it hasn't been cared for that much.

Thanks to all for your replies. I am new to the Cummins Diesel family - I am just in the process of buying a 1996 2500 4x4 Ext. Cab. Any comments on problems to look out for?

 

KDP, you need to get this taken care of

 

As I mentioned I am new to the cummins diesel. What is a KDP? What might be the best way to resolve the issue?

 

KDP = Killer Dowel Pin. A small steel pin that locates the front timing case to the block. There was a little too much wiggle room in the case or block, and the KDP could fall out, landing in the gears, destroying things. If the owner is lucky, the pin falls free into the crankcase, but if unlucky, the pin falls into gears, either wedging against the timing case and cracking it (badly!) or into meshed gears, breaking gear teeth. The fix is really pretty simple, and there are companies selling kits that include a template and parts to put a tab or setscrew/bolt over the offending pin, locking it into the block.
