Exhaust Brake On Cummins
Exhaust Brake On Cummins
The Cummins website states that Dodge does not recommend a Jacob exhaust brake on a truck with auto trans. Does anyone with a auto trans use one or what is the problem with using one on a auto trans.
Re:Exhaust Brake On Cummins
The problem with the auto transmission is that the torque converter will unlock during decelleration and the brake is basically useless. The torque converter will heat up from the added drag from the engine and will eventually fail.
There are aftermarket TC's that will handle the braking torque with an auxilliary switch to keep the TC locked during decelleration. So you can do it, just not with a stock truck.
At least thats how it was explained to me..

Re:Exhaust Brake On Cummins
Ditto what Lil Dog said. DC's choice of Auto trannys is basically the trucks with the 47RE auto is a grocery getter. You have to spend $5k and kiss your warranties goodbye in order to get the truck to do what it is supposed to do. Supposedly the 03's with the 48RE and HO motor can take the E-Brake. Someone correct me if I am wrong on that.

LONG LIVE THE ETH/DEE!!!
Re:Exhaust Brake On Cummins
Sticks is correct.

Jacobs (owned by Cummins) is currently in the process of getting DC approval for their new exhaust brake designed specifically for the 48RE auto in the 03 Rams.
