Your gonna need at least a torque converter and valve body to run an exhaust brake on an auto. The lock up clutch in the stock converter isn't strong enough to handle being locked up like an exhaust brake demands.

Most exhaust brakes generate about 180~190 brake horsepower at ~3,500 rpms. If the torque convertor isn't already slipping under towing loads, then it will handle an exhaust brake. However, there are thrust washers in the automatic prior to 2004 or 5 that were not designed to handle the reverse thrust generated by the EB. To be safe, you should check into trans upgrades.
