Exhaust

i don't really know much about diesel performance, and want to do a few things to my truck now that i'm makin a lil cash, but don't wanna get too wild cause i have a heavy foot and i don't trust the tranny, nor do i have enough cash to replace it with one i want.

so i want to put a stingle stack on my truck, and i'm wondering if there are any benefits to buying a kit from a performance shop, or just buying a flange, flex pipe and a chrome stack. my older cousin did it on his old Ford IDI, but i don't know enough about EGT'S and flow and **** to do it to mine. If i'm gonna homemake something on my truck i want to know that its gonna be ok and as good as a bought product.

what do you guys think? a 7 inch homemade stack kit can flow like a bought one?

oh another thing, i don't have an EGT guage so i don't where mine stand, but does a bigger exhaust lower EGT's, how does all that stuff work, cause i was thinkin of starting to add some mod's to my truck and don't wanna run into any trouble because i fabricated my own exhaust or what.

well i gues while i'm at it, you guys think an air intake, exhaust and injectors are a good start if i plan on maybe buying a chip/programmer like an adrenaline down the line? Will it be hard on the Injection pump w/out a fass system? and which intake and injectors would you go with starting out?

wow sitting bored at work i really start to ramble but i'm kinda lookin forward to what everyone has to say.

thanks fellas

Replace your stock lift pump first, then add a good set of gauges esp. Fuel Pressure. Then start from there. I am going to put a good scavaging 4" exhaust systemn on first then an intake and a Quad Adr box.. Good luck and welcome.

There are tons of aftermarket LP's out there, FASS, AirTex, AirDog, Walbro, Holly Blue Black the list goes on and on. Point being anything is better than the stock replacement you just put on. Get gauges on first and see where you stand pressure wise. A stack with no fueling mods will look cool I guess but is kinda pointless (my opinion) if it can't roll the coal.

You mention an ADR and a stock tranny (auto?) not a good combo but can be done if your careful, it will tell you when it doesn't like it anymore. As for EGT's a larger exhaust will help cool some but not really when your stock, not enough fuel to heat it up, I was told the more fuel you throw at it the more it will cool over the stock setup so no harm with a stack and stock truck. Also with the ADR you get all the gauges with the Pulse monitor so you can save some money going that route FP, EGT, Boost, Trans Temp.

As for the VP, it's a gamble. I always had good FP, never below 6 psi stock and lost it at 82000 miles, never tapped. My auto was going out at 80000 so I had Dave Goerend rebuild it and I've never looked back, solid shifts and lockup. I only have 86000 miles now but 3000 of those miles were towing in the Rockies and a road trip to MN and back towing ~7000TT.

Like most I did things back wards, EZ and then the upgrades and gauges, what's the fun in rock solid FP with a stock truck, I wanted to go and then have solid fuel pressure

Good luck

yeah as of right now a stack just looks cool, but ya know how they say a chain is only as strong as its weakest link? well i dont want a cheap fab exhaust to be a weak link. so anyway being realistic, no adr cause i wont get a tranny for a while, just injectors an air intake and exhaust(stack), what injectors and intake should i go with, or should i even get injectors? are they a mod that comes later on after other mods that let my truck use the extra fuel?

I'm trying to get a lil guidance getting started lol.

oh and what exactly is meant by "bombing" a truck?

In order of importance:
1. FP gauge & others
2. BHAF or similar Air system
3. Fueling box-Edge, etc., you decide.- These add HP & torque, so until you beef up the tranny, keep it mild. There are some that give you a complete range of options,, probably your best bet.
4. 5" stailess exhaust. Not a stack, but more cost effective & practical
Until you do the tranny, this is your best bet of things to get done.
Did I mention get some Bilstein shocks? These make an amazing diffreence in the ride.
Enjoy!

I am going to be making a single exhaust stack for my truck (as soon as time allows). You can make anything that you can buy. There is nothing special about the kits. I priced everything out and should be able to do it for around $120.00.

which edge would be the fueling box, the comp, juice, or EZ? are most of the fueling boxes the 65 hp boxes and are they all mostly the same? (bully dog's 65 hp box vs. diablo vs edge vs quadzilla etc...)

another thing, whats the wire tap i'm hearing about the adr and juice and comp. whats it do specifically and is it hard on a stock fuel system?

The Juice and Comp are the same box except the Juice comes with a monitor. In order to achieve the full 120hp gain that the Juice or Comp is capable of producing, you have to run one of the wires from the box and tap onto one of the VP44's wires. If you don't tap onto this wire you will only gain 60 hp like the EZ. The EZ is a timing box and the Juice and Comp is a fueling and timing box.

I believe the latest and greatest thing out now for these trucks is the Quadzilla Adrenaline. With the right software, they add 180 RWHP and 420RWTQ. I have only had experience with the Edge boxes on these trucks so I can't really comment on the Quadzilla, but Im sure somebody else will chime in. Do a search for Adrenaline, and you should find a bunch of threads on here telling all about it.

well i did things backwards as well. but 2 things that really made a difference were injectors and the tranny. we all want to go fast and have power but if you dont watch it and handle it properly it will tear your truck up ! open the exhaust up first and then an ez then guages then tranny then pour it on !
