Question Engine Oil Temperature???

My TST Powermax R46 adjustable remote is saying my oil temperature is getting as high as 310 degrees!!! Does this sound right or is the sensor crazy? I'm still running 15W40 dyno break in oil. I was told the average oil temperature is supose to be around 275 degrees for regular oil and 300 degrees for synthetic, does this sound right???

Well first off synthetic will run cooler temps under most any condition.. I highly doubt that our engines run that high of an oil temp. I was told that the oil temp should run right around with what your water temp is. So anywhere from 170-210+ under a heavy load or hard woking conditions... Hope this helps!

Oil temp is usually 20°-30° hotter than water temp.

This is why you have an oil-to-water oil cooler integrated into your oil filter mount. If the temps ran the same, there wouldn't be any point to having an oil cooler cooled by water, now would there?

So, you should have oil temps right in the 210-220 range and maybe as high as 240 when working REALLY hard.

Dino oil won't last long at really high temps, and if you are getting temps that high, I'd suggest you try to find the cause of the high temps.

You won't be able to sustain oil temps of 300 with dino oil-- it will fail and so will the engine, eventually.

I ran an Oil Temp gauge for 2 yrs, never saw higher than 220*. That was racing in Texas summer...OAT at 105*.

Suspect it's you gauge. One way to tell is wipe oil off your dip stick with a finger when warm (don't touch metal stick itself). If normal temp will be very warm but doable. If it is 310* Watch Out !!!!
I don't really recommend this but it's a quick way to possibly rest easier.

Radio Shack sells an infared tempature senor hand held for about $50.00 when I go mine. Usfull in checking a lot of temps. Tires and brekes on the road and with a trailer. A quick walk around when fueling can tell a lot. I going to check the temp at the thermostat housing and the oil at the dipstick, I'll try it next run when the truck is warmed up.

Added note: if the oil is extreamly hot the oil pressure will be lower than normal. With he multi viscosity dino oil there will be a slight drop. Synthetic not hardly and drop.

Got a temperature gun and it's actually at 180 degrees. I called TST and they are sending me the proper sending unit at no charge. They were extremly helpful and curtious. Hopefully the new sensor will do the trick. Thanks TST...
