Edge EZ and torque converter lock up?
I have an 03 ram CTD. California model 235 HP 465 Torgue, 48RE trans. I installed a 4 inch exhaust, Magnum Force AFE and reently added a Edge EZ module. I have it set at the 70 HP setting of course. When I drive and get up to 50MPH I get torque converter lock up often as it shifts into O.D. At first I didn't what the noise was, kind of a clanking noise when it shifted into Over Drive. My friend told me that the converter was locking up. Is this something I should be concerned about? I thought the new 48 RE tranny is stong enough to handle the added power? any suggestions???????
Re:Edge EZ and tourque converter lock up?
I do not claim to be an expert, but here's an idea. The way I hear it, the 48RE IS stronger, but the TC is still a weak one that deserves aftermarket if you are doing anything larger than an EZ, such as adding an E-brake. or shifting with the TC locked.
As far as your situation, perhaps the EZ has brought the torque up enough that it locks the TC just before, talking a second or so, the shift into OD. If it is shifting locked this may be the problem as the TC is not made to shift locked.
Just my 2 cents.

You might test it on another setting to see if it changes the lockup and shift point and stops the noise. You might also just accelerate harder a few times, since that will change the shift points, and see if the noise changes for better or worse.
As I said, I don't KNOW that this is the problem, but that's all I could think of from your description.
As far as the EZ hurting the TC goes, I doubt it will damage the TC. The reason I say this is becaue of my experiences with the stock TC in my 47RE tranny. When I installed my PM3 I was told not to go over level 3 with the stock tranny. I noticed on level 2 that the TC took about 2 long seconds to lock up fully. I thought I was hurting the TC, but it turns out if I backed off the PM3 to level 0, the TC locked up quicker, like stock again.
While I imagine if you put enough torque into that TC it will genuinely mess it up, I don't think the EZ will do it.
You may want to check with a transmission shop you trust to diagnose the problem, just the "listen" test, not pulling anything apart, and see what they think. You might also be able to talk to a tranny shop with lots of experience with these trannies, like ATS. I noticed they sell the high-perf TC for the 48RE but do not mention any other upgrades for it. This leads me to believe they think the tranny is solid, but the TC is the weak link.
Perhaps someone else will know and chime in.

Re:Edge EZ and torque converter lock up?
Ok, I backed the EZ to the 45 HP setting and still notice some shuddering when it shifts into O.D. It doesn't do it all the time, but only when I get close to 50 MPH and I give it a little gas prior to it shifting into O.D. When this first happened it sounded like the exhaust pipe was rattling, this was prior to me adding the exhaust and AFE when I was towing a boat up a grade. My friend is the one who told me that it was converter lock up. Now it seems to do it with no load. There is no slipping only the shuddering sound as it shifts into OD. Should I contact the dealer???????
Need some help.....

Maybe we're going about this the wrong way. What about the exhaust or the tranny mount? Is the exhaust running very close to any place on the frame or cross member that it could get twisted into hitting when the torque of loccking the TC twists the engine and tranny? I know it isn't much twisting, but if you have a mount loose, it could be magnified.
If you lock out OD the TC should lock up in third and you will not hit the same sequence of OD and TC lockup. This may or may not give you the same sound, even if you are experienced the exhaust hitting something currently. The reason for this is because the torque is different when the TC locks up in that gear.
As far as taking it to the dealer, it depends on the dealer. As I understand it they can detect the EZ as having been on there now, even though it doesn't punch any wires. This may be an issue if the dealer wants to be that way. I'd definitely pull it off before going if you decide to go to them.
As far as the other upgrades are concerned, it is possible to get a hassle about those also, depending on the dealer.
You ask in the 3rd gen forum if anyone else has experienced this sort of thing?
