DTT vs. Goerend Round2
DTT vs. Goerend Round2
Hi, im pretty new to this diesel buisness and as of now I have a whimpy gasser which is going to change (as soon as I can find a 96-98 reg. cab).I have big plans for my diesel.Anyway, I read the thread that BigBlue posted on this supject about DTT vs. Goerend a while ago. But I have not come to a conclusion on which transmission to drop all my dough into once i get a diesel. Are there any people on here that have a Goerend transmission that holds around 600hp without any problems? I know the DTT are good, but id rather spend less money for a tranny that can hold around 600hp. Thanks...
i think DTT pays attention to every detail in their tranny while Goerends rebuilds it and gives u a very solid TC and VB....goerends is also very friendly and has the best warranties...not to mention they offer a triple disk which DTT wont because of their beliefs
price is also in Goerend's favor....i personally am going after a Goerends with the triple disk...around 2700$ if i remember
good luck with ur decision

You'd rather spend less $ you say? I hear that one.
Funny you bring the older thread up............

When I talked to dave he said that he had a couple of customers that had over 600hp but they hadn't had his tranny for very long. If dave had enough trucks over 600hp with tons of abuse and mileage, I'd most certainately go with his tranny because the price is right and the warranty is unbeatable. But since he doesn't have that I decided to go with DTT. Bunch of people running them, lots of miles, lots of high horsepower, lots of abuse, 0 failures that I have heard of.

First off....be realistic. Are you really going to drop the $$$$ to get to 600? If so, I wouldn't be quibbling over the 1K or so difference in price.
Secondly, if you're upfront with Dave about you HP goals, he can build accordingly. If you break it pushing 600HP through it, Dave will stand behind it. Every time I've needed something from him, he has FAR exceeded my expectations.....

Yes, I am going to drop the money to get over 600. My goal is to be there by the time I graduate (which at the rate I'm going is very realistic
). This truck is my baby and I want the best for it.
I was very up front with Dave on my HP goals and he told me his self that he had a couple of guys but they didn't have a bunch of miles on them. I respected the fact that he was very honest with me on that subject. And like I said earlier, if he had more guys pushing the kind of power I want and if they had a bunch of miles on them then I would have gone with Dave. He has THE best warranty, he's got THE best prices, and he's a grea guy to boot. BUT, he doesn't have the things I want and that's why I chose not to go with Dave. He's got a bunch of guys in the 400-500hp range and they are holding great. But he doesn't have a lot in the 600hp+ range and that's what I'm looking for. I'm looking at dropping a BUNCH of money once my tranny is built (I want every option available) and I want to know that it will hold the power 100%. I have no doubt that Dave's tranny's will hold the power but he just doesn't have enough people in that range to make me comfortable. Dave makes a great tranny and I highly recommend him.

Well 1k is about 1 turbo....But i think im with BigBlue on this one. I also dont mind paying more if it is better quality, and theres more people runing the DTT without any major problems. I just dont want to pay a lot and get something thats not up to par.
From what I seen and heard you can't go wrong with the DTT tranny. It was my first choice but Piers talked me into one of their tranny. I basically got more for the same money and I got the warranty that I wanted as well. At the end of the day, if I didn't have as much money owing to me from all my cores and Piers giving me an everything billet tranny, I would have the DTT tranny. The triple disc converter was another plus in Piers favor. I don't think you could go wrong with either of the vendor that you listed. Another thing you should look into is driving each vendor tranny and know how you want your tranny set-up. Another hint is don't set-up your tranny for a 600plus motor if your not pulling that right now. Your truck should have a custom set-up for the power level your at. Everything should be custom for that power level, from the shift points, stall speed and how the truck shifts. The tranny should come apart a few times just to get everything that way you want not someone elses. This effects so much on how your truck drives and your smile factor.

I know you'll keep throwing money at it....
More isn't necessarily better when it comes to clutches.. Think about this.. there's many guys well over 600hp using a single disk convertor, and it holds. I think DTT's attention to fluid flow through the trans is what makes theirs work..
Think of it this way...
if it was to take 50 sq. in of clutch disc at 100psi to hold a certain power level (let's say 1000lb-ft torque).. you could go about this 2 ways.
1: Use a disc that is that big, and make sure that the 100psi from the trans fluid pump = 100psi at the TC via sealing up leakage, attention to fluid flow, etc...
2: Use multiple discs that are 100 sq. in total, but the 100psi from the pump = 50psi at the TC because of the normal 47RE internal leakage.
DTT's approach is #1, and the other builders seem to go at it with #2. Is either one better? That's purely personal preference.. Both in this case get the job done - transfer the power without slippage.
All the numbers above are PURELY hypothetical, and just used as an example... Don't read into it!
This isn't saying any trans is better or worse.. It's purely your own preference. I only have issue with one trans builder, and it's not DTT, Goerends, or Suncoast.

As one who freely admits to being awed by workings of the automatic transmission and was easily confused when following discussions about them....I read every thread for six months....and finally chose DTT based on more expirience than the others and no serious reported problems. Basically 100% satisfaction.
I bgt a tranny based on my honest belief I would be satisfied with 300-350 hp! My burning need to expirience 500+ hp did not hit until a year later. I kept asking my installer...what do we need to upgrade? He said "let me know when it starts acting up".
Is DTT wise enough to know some of us lie, without meaning to? Or is my tranny so tough that it does not care what I throw at it?
After 2 yrs, 70,000 miles and being over 500 hp, I installed billet shafts and had the entire tranny refreshed. Other than minor changes in the shift points, my DTT had NEVER so much as hiccuped once in 2 yrs!
The inspection showed basically minor wear and required no unplanned parts to be replaced. The single disk TC showed no signs of excessive heat or serious wear. All this after drag racing, playing hard, hauling at over gross weight weekly...and adding twice the new hp originally planned.
Can you ask for more? My expirience more than justifies my spending the extra money for what I feel is as good as it gets! Just my Opinion....
RJ
