Drag Comp "Rattle" on hard acceleration

I just got the comp put back on after Edge sent me a new one and everything is back to normal except for a noticeable rattle/clatter during hard acceleration. Is it because it's a HO? It didn't do it with the regular comp, only the drag and as far as I know the only difference is how it fuels up top, NOT down low so I don't understand the clatter. Is my VP getting weak or is there another explanation for this? It won't clatter if you smoothly get into it, only if you stomp on the pedal....

Is it coming from your gauges? My boost gauge used to do that under hard acceleration.

When I called Edge inquiring about updating mine to the Drag a couple years back, they told me all the upgrade did was up the defuel up to 3200 vs 2700. I decided not to do it for $125. After the Smarty came out, I no longer needed that function anyway.

That said last time on the dyno (using the Edge Comp for timing) the guys standing around said the timing rattle was about to make them come unglued. Mine has never been updated and I hope to never send it back. A buddy of mine sent his Drag Comp back and now his truck doesn't smoke hardly at all, even when staging for boosted launches. He lost a second on his 1/4 mile times. Not sure what is going on at Edge these days, but doesn't seem for the best. My buddy also complained about their customer service. This is a very patient guy too.

I hope they square things away or this is an isolated incident. I've personally been very happy with my Comp. Customer service was fine a couple years ago when I inquired. I believe I read somewhere that they were recently bought out.

What causes the timing rattle anyways?

Well as far as customer service goes they have been pretty good. Sent me a brand new drag comp. But I didn't have this rattle/clatter before I upgraded to the drag, but like you said it doesn't change any downlow fueling parameters but yet I know it is related to the comp because it only does it when the comp is on. Plus the rattle clears after boost comes on, the clatter is only when you stomp on it from zero boost...

Maybe I should clarify. My buddy was having issues with his and they agreed to take it back no problem and reflash it. When they did and he got it back it was acting freaky like still being lit up when the power was off, etc. When he called them back, they got very defensive as he asked questions going through what could be wrong with it. They finally took it back again and did another reflash. It works now, just no smoke. He mostly just mentioned how defensive they got and he is very laid back.

I think of timing rattle like this.. It's too much fuel too early in the power stroke. The fuel is try to autoignite as the piston is still traveling up to TDC.

Real bad on headgaskets and rods.

Help me out if this is wrong.

i was told that is problem with the edge it puts to much fuel in down low and when you add large injectors its really hard on head gaskets. im lookin for some info on if this is true.

hmm maybe when they flashed it the first time and sent me this new one it has a newer version which changes fueling parameters down low because my old comp stacked with my smarty didn't do this. I need to go take my smarty out to make sure it is strictly the comp but if this is what it's going to do I'm gonna put it up for sale...

MikeD answered your question I think.

To add a little more I have taken to running the Smarty molsty on SW2 (no timing). Only after a short time I can really hear the difference in engine noise due to timing rattle. For example if it is cooler out, like below 50F or so, there is more rattle. I am guessing the IAT tuning comes in here, because when it warms up the timing rattle goes away. As an another example, if I am cruising along in lets say 3rd gear and slowly let off the throttle. When the engine unloads to a certain point you can hear the timing change.

Running along at highway speed sometimes it is hard to tell if the engine is running at 1800 or 2300 RPM just by the sound. You don't get the feeling that at 2300 RPM it is about to come through the fire wall and sit in the passenger seat next to you.

Take your truck back to stock for a bit and see what I mean. I ran with timing for so long I never really noticed it. It is very distinct once you get used too hearing (or not hearing) it.

Jim

I'll unload the smarty today and see if the noise dissipates...

and the noise went away when the truck was put back on stock software...SOOO it isn't the comp, it's the smarty/comp combo. I've been running it on even settings as to eliminate too much timing so back to not sure what's up?? Anyone of you guys with the smarty/comp stack experienced this. I figured it would do it on the odd settings but not the even?

Thanks for the input. I can definately hear a difference running sw1 compared to the other sw's which is why I don't run sw1. I might have to run some even sw's soon just to see if I can hear a difference.

Ph4tty, that's what I do, even SW's on the Smarty with the Hot Rod pump. I think the HR pump adds enough timing. I did get some more HP last time on the dyno adding timing, but for everyday driving, I like the non-timing programs.
